Guest wdenike Report post Posted February 19, 2014 Willie, I chose the .17hmr basically because 90% of all my calling is for fox and cats. A coyote is a bonus animal for me. I really wanted something that I could shoot 25-150 yards if I had to and not blow up a fox or cat. Plus I just always really wanted one and this gun is nearly brand new and I pretty much stole it for the price I got for it. Yes, the rim fire roller coaster on ammo could become a concern, but as for now I can find the bullet I shoot really easy and I bought quite a few and probably will buy a few more in the near future. Brian Thanks for the reply. Like I said I ended up going with the cz527 varmint in the .17 hornet. And so far really fur friendly shooting the 20gr. Wanting to load some 25gr. but am a little afraid it may change the results on the fox and cats. And like you they are what I enjoy targeting. Again real good looking shooter, and an excellent season. Keep up the good work!! Take care, Willie
Couestracker Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Good job on the varmints! I've got a new toy too, an AR-15 in .204 Ruger I haven't had a chance to try out yet. Are you using an electronic call or mouth call? Congrats on all the success!
standman Report post Posted February 21, 2014 />Good job on the varmints! I've got a new toy too, an AR-15 in .204 Roger I haven't had a chance to try out yet. Are you using an electronic call or mouth call? Congrats on all the success! Thanks. E-caller Called and killed two more fox and one more coyote this morning. No camera, forgot to put it in the truck. One fox was killed at 10 yards. He came in and when he go close to the speaker he climbed right up a pine tree and perched on a limb about 15ft up the tree. The other fox right after him was shot at 25 yards. .17hmr performed great. The coyote was called in on my third stand and shot at 20 yards. He ran about 30 yards after and piled up. So far so good with the .17 hmr. Brian
Hyperwrx Report post Posted February 22, 2014 I had a Savage .17HMR I used for one season to see how it would do on fox and bobcats. It did not do what I wanted and I sold it. I was not happy with the make and model. The magazine/feed system on the savage was goofy. I had to push up on the magazine when cycling the bolt to get it to feed correctly. I used CCI's 17 grain TNT jacketed hollowpoints 1 entire season. The problem I had with the round was I'd shoot a fox and it wouldn't drop dead right there. It would run off 10-20 yards in the Manzanita bushes and die probably but problem was I couldn't find it. I shot a dozen coyotes with it (on fox stands), and would end up having to put a 2nd shot to kill them. I once had a coyote double come into about 20 yards and I shot them both, not before watching them jump and spin for 30 seconds as I fought to chamber another round and shoot again. I did shoot 1 nice bobcat with it. Called cat into 30 yards and I drilled it right in the middle of the chest. Cat flopped down and didn't twitch. No exit and almost no entry. I decided the bullet does not travel fast enough, even with shooting the smallest bullet I could find. 17 g @ 2500 fps. I sold the gun after the season ended. Since you mentioned problems with finding ammunition I checked in the safe and still have 3-4 unopened boxes and one box of 21 if you are interested. CCI's 17 grain TNT jacketed hollowpoints. I paid $19.95 a box back 3-4 years ago. Let me know and we'll work out a deal. Here are some .17 hmr kill shots and the gun just before I sold it.
Flatlander Report post Posted February 23, 2014 Hyperwx I can see the problem with your savage right there in the pics. They put the bolt on the wrong side. You should have sent it back under warranty

standman Report post Posted February 24, 2014 Hyperwrx thanks for the offer on the ammo. I'll pass for now. The ammo I shoot now shoots really well out of my gun I think I'll try to stick to the same brand for now. Thanks again. Brian
