Rehydrating an non tanned pelt

Recommended Posts

I got an old bob cat pelt that was stretched and fleshed about 5 years ago but never tanned or oiled. It's all shriveled up now, is there anything that can be done or is it trash? I thought about warm water then restretching it and oiling.

I would think just sending it off for tanning would resolve some of that shriveling. The tanning process itself and soaking in the tanning solutions will re-hydrate it. I'm not sure but by trying to re-stretch it again you might risk the hair follicules separating and thus slippage. I could be wrong here maybe it would be fine. Some of the trappers could probably chime in with better advice.

I worked at a tannery in HS for a while, the hides would come in stretched, salted and dried, they were were in a big saltwater vat for about a week before they got to working on them. So I suggest that, use non-iodized salt, but you need to agitate it and check on it at least once a day. If you soak it too long it will cause the hair to slip.
