Guest akaspecials Report post Posted February 11, 2014 I am looking to upgrade my Remington 700 (chambered in 30-06) to shoot longer distances (600 yards). The gun is pretty much stock right now with synthetic stock, a cheap Bushnell scope and Weaver 1 inch rings. I can consistently hit a pie plate at 300 yards, but after that my group goes away. I'm a novice at shooting over a few hundred yards, so please forgive my lack of knowledge. I've started by ordering a Timney Trigger for it. My next step going to be optics and possibly doing something with the stock. Do you guys have any suggestions for Optics less than $500 and any suggestions on what to do with the stock? Is the cheap synthetic stock capable of being bedded? Anything else I'm missing to make this gun more accurate besides improving my shooting? Thanks in advance. Norteno Report post Posted February 11, 2014 I've looked through that Bushnell scope that comes on that rifle and it is horrible. You are going to be extremely happy once you get a quality scope on that 700.
Guest akaspecials Report post Posted February 11, 2014 What ammunition are you shooting? Federal Premium 150 grain Nosler ballistic tips. I've also done hand loads but thus far the federal has shot the same or better than any hand loads I've tried.
KeithV Report post Posted February 11, 2014 I am no expert but for your optics price i say for fifty more dollars get a leupold vari x 2 6to 18 with target knobs. They have a 1 inch tube so no need for 30 mil rings burris posi lign rings are awesome as well. there are also vortex nikon and redfield options as well. Like Casey said try and look into bedding the stock or order one offline boyds stockys or other options. that 3006 is avery capable round i guarentee you will start seeing better groups. Hoss50 Report post Posted February 12, 2014 I would start with some decent glass and good mounts. My friend and I have been working with his 3006 out to 500 yards and even with marginal glass on his Marlin X7 with pretty good success on the 11" gong. The trigger with some good glass should be a great start.
gaps Report post Posted February 12, 2014 Good start with the Timney. I love mine and it is set at 2lbs, they will set it at your desired pull weight from the factory if you ask. If it was me I would purchase a Vortex Viper HS-LR or Viper HS-T next. In my opinion they are the most feature packed scopes for the money. My brother in law bought a used factory Remington 700 in 7mm, bought a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50, factory winchester 150gr from wal-mart and sighted in at 100 yards, then took a shot at 1,000 and hit it. Check it out in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kAknB_mZ0s. I'm not saying that is all you need but a good trigger and good optics/rings/rail is a good start! AUminer Report post Posted February 13, 2014 Howdy I would get a scope good rings and bases Burris has some excellent rings for around $50 and cameraland has the Vortex Viper HS 6-24x50 demo right now for $499. A very good scope that should suit your purpose very well. Good luck on your build

IA Born Report post Posted February 13, 2014 Not much more to add that hasn't been added. I had a factory synthetic stock put on my 700ADL .30-06 and absolutely had it bedded and floated. Factory trigger was adjusted to 2.75 lbs and I have a good Zeiss scope on it. 200 yards groups with my hand-loaded Barnes 165 gr TSX shoot 0.81". Trigger, bed/float, optics, and try handloading, even bumping up to 165 gr or 168 gr and you should be able to reach beyond 600 yards all day long. Many people seem to forget that the .30-06 was the original 1000-yard open sight match competition rifle. Springfield 1903s and M1 Garands are capable of 1000+ yard accuracy (without scopes) all day long in the hands of someone who knows how to work them. Modern rifles set up properly are just as capable! Good luck!
sjvcon Report post Posted February 15, 2014 You can bed a factory synthetic, but they are probably not stiff enough to be a "really" good platform. You don't need to go to the expense of a Manners or McMillan to get a good stock (of course ... they are EXCELLENT). I'd check prices at Stocky's for some of their stocks. They have some laminated wood stocks with aluminum bedding built in and of course the B&C and HS stuff, which is really decent for the most part. Worst case, get a laminated stock cheap and put pillars in it. Trigger ... done. Decent stock and careful bedding. Good glass. The only other thing would be to have the action trued and a barrel, but that gets into real money. Factory barrels aren't great, but they are capable of shooting (most of the time). Tubbs makes some ammo that you can shoot to "lap" the barrel. Might be worth looking into that. not really expensive I don't think. Good luck.
