CouesPursuit Report post Posted January 31, 2014 After several days of chasing the hit list developed on the August 13 hunt- I finally caught up with buck #4. Although he is clearly the smallest, he eluded me 3 days in January living up to his and his pals reputations. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/42696-advice-please-weary-mature-coues-bucks/?hl=%2Badvice+%2Bplease+%2Bcoues+%2Bweary He came in ornery with his chest up high and alert from 125 yards south of my stand. He closed 125 down to 25 in 20 seconds and stops completely out of sight. I'm left with 2-3 minutes of anticipation to make sure he won't vanish. The wind was perfect, the birds and the squirrels were masking the sound of my heartbeat, and his antlers finally poked through the oaks beside me. I was standing, ready to draw, but behind his antlers came his eyes staring straight up at me. As I let him pass beneath me at 3 yards, I repositioned myself and the stand makes the slightest sound. He is on full alert, facing the same position as hitlist buck 3 in his photo. After letting him pass those couple extra yards, I drew and released my 400 gr. VAP tipped with an UlmerEdge. I drilled him no more than an inch high of my mark. After watching the look on his face paired with great blood on his exit side, it became real. I just arrowed my first Coues buck! The now bright red arrow shaft was laying 8 yards from the base of the tree, after the pass through. The UlmerEdge head opened and locked open as designed. I followed a consistent blood trail for 75 yards and found his right crabclaw broken from his death run after I arrowed him. He was missing an eyeguard which I would like to believe was broken from battles with his double main beam buddy, hitlist buck 1. My DIY, 2014 archery Coues buck. CouesPursuit Report post Posted January 31, 2014 Thanks! I looked around a bit but I'm not too concerned for it. Adds to the story and he isn't P&Y or anything to score.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted January 31, 2014 Congratulations on your first. By the looks of your pictures you will soon have #2 under your belt. Thanks for sharing your story of the hunt and all the pics. The only thing that could have made it better would have been a coueswhitetail.com sticker on the window of the truck.
