Mexico part two!

Recommended Posts

I just got back from my second week long trip to Mexico this season late last night. What an experience! I can't believe just a few short weeks ago I was able to harvest a beautiful double droptine buck while hunting with my three boys (see my other post in the Mexico forum titled: "Double droptine buck" for the story and pic's). That hunt took place between Christmas and New Years and while we saw plenty of deer there was no rut action and the weather was a little cooler which made sitting water pretty slow.

We had traveled down to the ranch over the Thanksgiving weekend and set up 18 trail cameras over various water holes across most of the ranch. During our hunt at the end of December we had a ton of pictures but they were mostly does and small bucks. We did have one buck that seemed to come in on a regular basis that we guessed at around 100 inches but that was it for big bucks. I have to admit I was a little worried, but what a difference three weeks makes! Around January 16-18 it was like someone flipped a switch and we started getting pictures of good bucks across the ranch. We Identified several shooters and after several days of patience one of my buddies put an arrow in his first ever coues buck which turned out to be a total stud with 19 inch main beams and 6 inch eyegaurds! Several days later I got lucky and another one of our target bucks came in to a tank I was sitting and I put a 140 grain Berger through his chest at only 30 yards with my 280 AI. I should have brought my bow! As a consolation prize I was also able to take a cool buck that was rutting a doe one evening right before dark.

As usual Mexico didn't let me down and once again I had a wonderful experience! The good people, the fantastic food, and the beautiful setting have me hooked for life. I haven't even been home for 24 hours and I already find myself planning next years trip in my mind. I am truly blessed to have the means (and a patient wife) that allow me to fulfill my dream hunt each year over the past eight years.

You've put in the hours and miles and that is for sure to deserve the last month you've had. Congratulations again on some incredible bucks! Great pictures and even better that you were able to get the trail cam sequence. Very awesome my friend! Might be tough to beat the season you've had but it will be a heck of a lot of fun trying!
