.22 LR where to buy?

Recommended Posts

CJNAZ, the facilities and machines that crank out rimfire ammunition are completely different from what they use for centerfire cartridges. You cannot re-tool an industrial automated centerfire ammo press to produce rimfire cartridges. There's more to the process than the name that's written on the box. The particular brand of ammo you use may not actually be manufactured by that same company- there's lots of contracted work through smaller regional companies. rossislider's Remington rep might be right to a degree- but I don't think that centerfire production would affect anything but the available raw material pool (copper, brass and lead supply) But I digress...

The .22lr shortage continues to plague the gun-world due to massive current demand and companies trying to fulfill backorders for the 2012-2013 craziness. Demand is ultimately the reason- whether it be hoarders, price gougers, etc. The demand for .22lr is unprecedented and it will take a few years to catch up with the backorders from the big ammo retailers while still keeping tabs on with current demand. Most rimfire ammunition manufacturers are still cranking at full tilt- and I think about it kind of like the national debt clock... for every batch produced they go deeper in the hole because demand is way higher than what they can possibly produce. It'll be like this for a while, get used to it. At least the markup in most big box stores hasn't gone too far, but it has increased significantly over pre-Newtown years.

Back in the day, I remember my dad taking me to Yellow Front and paying like .79 cents for a box of 22lr! Don't remember how many rounds, but remember riding in the back seat of our old '72 Mercury Marquis, admiring the shiny new bullets in that plastic box with the sliding lid! :)

When I was 10 or 11, my parents started putting me on the Greyhound From Tucson to Gage, NM to help the grandparents out. They put me to work around the ranch for .65 cents an hour.

I'd board the bus in Tucson with one suitcase, a ,22 Remington and a brick of .22s. Within 2 weeks, I'd be bugging the old folks for a ride (72 miles roundtrip) into Deming for more ammo.

My how times have changed.

My how the times have indeed changed. Back in the early 80's I was buying 22LR ammo from behind the counter at a 7-11 on the NW corner of Guadalupe & Alma School. Then driving South a few miles and hunting.

There are only so many things one can b!tch about.... One must choose, B!tching about not being able to find .22 ammo, or the prices. I don't control prices, neither did I say I support the sight. He asked where to find ammo, and I helped. And I don't know where you're getting $40 for CCI, as I am staring directly at a box on the site for $26/100. Not cheap, but not $40.

I guess what I'm saying is... you have to treat .22lr ammo like trying to get Garth Brooks tickets in the early 90's.

Wasn't it the Yellow Front there? 7-11 on the SW corner. I just miss Yellow Front.

1999, high school. Got called to the principle office. He said "lets take a walk" we walked out to my truck in the school paring lot, hey says "do you know why we're here?" I respond no. He says "well, your rifles are exposed." He continues... If you don't want them stolen I recommend putting them behind your seat" that was it, no hassle or anything! He just gave sound advice. Man how times have changed and just a short period of time (15 years)

Senior year - 1986. At lunch, I was transferring my shotgun from my Jeep (no top) to my buddies truck to go on an afternoon Quail hunt. The security guard (we called him Sneaky) walked up and asked us what we were doing. We said we were going quail hunting.....he said good luck. The next day we got called into the office and we were given Saturday detention for ditching Physics and 7th hour hour. No mention of the guns.......of course we had a trap and skeet team and were allowed to reload on campus. And yes this was in Phoenix.
