Coues assassin Report post Posted January 27, 2014 Well this will be my girlfriends first time putting in for elk and I'm really hoping to have her get drawn for cow. She has 0 bonus points and we plan on doing a rifle hunt not archery. Are there any units someone can suggest that she might stand a fair chance at getting drawn? Open to all options. Thank you
HuntHarder Report post Posted January 27, 2014 6b will have above a 25% chance with 0 points. 7E is also a good choice. a few 100% draw hunts are the limited opportunity hunts. 2a and 2b should be 100% draw as well. Good luck
khmer6 Report post Posted January 27, 2014 6a/b 7e late rifle. its all a shot in the dark, 80% of the permits will be available after the bonus pass. So just pick the 2 units you are more comfortable with and go with it. whichever unit you can scout the most or get help with would be the one I would put in for. I'm hoping for that early rifle 22N tag this year. Theres like 20ish tags only. I'm getting the kids in 6a jr rifle. Hopefully we can harvest some meat
elkaholic Report post Posted January 27, 2014 may sound like a broken record but elk #'s are way down - G&F has systematically killed off 10's of thousands of cows over the last 10 yrs . the big herds are basically gone forever take unit 10 ---7-8 yrs of 1600 +cow tags and agin this yr they have reduced the herds to nothing - hunters are seeing less elk than ever . good luck - try unit 10 bashing time - one hunters opinion I use to watch several herds - 20-30 elk or more feeding into the meadows every evening they came out on the distant hillsides - last yr I spent 5 days and didn't see any herds elk but one or 2 little bunchs of 5-6
hunthard Report post Posted January 27, 2014 I feel we will soon be like Colorado. Just rags running everywhere. G&F added 100 more tags to the late hunt in 27. And 3 years ago there were 100 early archery tags in 1 now we're at 325. You can't convince me it's not about money. We have 7 deer hunts in 31 and they are one of the highest in Dec coues tags. The quality of mature animals is on the decline. We've been in a drought and all we do is add tags. Sorry for the rant but I'm just getting sick of it. And I've been to plenty of meetings and they already have planned what they are going to do no matter if the majority of the people there disagree.

SwampMafia Report post Posted January 27, 2014 Sure you can go with 6b and get drawn fairly easily but for some odd reason, the cows are extremely few and far between. I went on an archery hunt in there for bull and in 4 days we saw 18 bulls and 1 cow. The cow we seen was crossing the road as we drove in at dusk. I would go with a peaks cow hunt. You can better your odds basically by choosing a later hunt. Never been on one but from what I've heard they are fairly quality hunts if your not afraid to hike. Mountainman99 Report post Posted January 28, 2014 First time Hunter should put in early rifle tag unit nine. Seems like first time hunters always draw :-) they hook ya then you wait forever for next tag.
out2hunt Report post Posted January 28, 2014 Pick your unit based upon her ability to travel through the cold and terrain. Some units are far more forgiving than others, 4b is a great starter unit IMO
