PelaPapas Report post Posted January 26, 2014 I'm in need of a new sleeping bag. My old go-to bag just isn't cutting it anymore. I've had it for years and the last couple outtings with it, I've waken up with my feet really cold. So I'm in the market for a new one! I was thinking of maybe trying out a mummy bag? Can anyone recommend me a good bag? Mostly will be using for feb./oct. hunts and camping in southern AZ. What temp rating would you recommend? Any input is greatly appreciated. rclouse79 Report post Posted January 26, 2014 Wait until an REI garage sale. I got an REI brand down 0 degree bag for around half off, and it kept me nice an toasty in the Colorado snow on my last elk hunt. If I don't need something right away I like to look around for a deal, but I am a cheap son of a B*#%&.
rcdinaz Report post Posted January 26, 2014 Do you want a bag for packing or just for tent camping? Mummy, square, down, synthetic? Down is awesome for weight and comfort but takes more care. I agree REI is great and a couple of times a year they also have 20% off for members as well as the garage sell. My daughter uses and REI down bag we got for a great price and it is a great bag. Her sleeping bag is better than mine. My favorite brand is Big Agnes because, I cant stand sleeping in a mummy bag. Also the lining in the BA bag has that cotton feel. I dont like the slick finish on some of the bags that feels clammy. Also check Eddie Bauer they have some really nice square traditional shaped bags and good sales a couple of times a year. Coues assassin Report post Posted January 26, 2014 I use a Teton 0 degree and sleep outside with just my sleeping bag during winter months and stay nice and warm
elpepe25 Report post Posted January 26, 2014 600-800 fill down is the way to go imo, it's lighter, packs smaller and is warmer than anything else. A 15-20 degree bag covers most AZ endeavors. Kelty makes a great bag for the price. http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___41045 http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___41049 http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___41047
bigorange Report post Posted January 26, 2014 Lots of good comments here...definitely decide what style and fill you want. I recently switched from mummy to rectangle and am very happy with the change. I was getting tired of the constricted legroom in the mummy, but no way I'd try to backpack the monster rectangle (it's a Teton zero degree I think). I'll hang onto my mummy for any backpacking trips in the future. Kelty makes really good bags at a good price. I too like Big Agnes, and especially the pad they sell that will slip into a sleeve on the bag so you're not sliding off the pad in the middle of the night. REI is a good place to look, as well as Summit Hut since looks like you're in Tucson.

Snapshot Report post Posted January 26, 2014 I bought a Cabelas Alaskan Guide model rectangular bag years ago. I still use it. Have never gotten cold in that bag, even in a Colorado snow storm in the backcountry.

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted January 26, 2014 I have a Cabelas 44 magnum 0 degree bag. Very high quality bag that keeps me plenty warm. My toes/feet to tend to get chilly when the temp is in the 20's or below but I'm not sure that that's not just me.

PRDATR Report post Posted January 26, 2014 I purchased a Wiggys a couple of years ago for my son and he is real happy with it. The nice part was they put the zipper on the left side for us when they made it. Rhey are real easy to work with to get what you want in a bag. http://wiggys.com/category.cfm?Category=41&CFID=648124&CFTOKEN=55161978
elpepe25 Report post Posted January 26, 2014 wiggy's is a good bag too, honeslty you cannot go wrong with kelty, Big agnes, marmot, mountain hardware, wiggys, Eureka, North Face, Sierra Designs, black diamond, deuter, granite gear, lafuma, rab, western mountaineering, montbell or any other quality bag. I would find the temp you want and the features you want and find the best deal from there. good deals and reviews can also be found at Backcountry.com
mattys281 Report post Posted January 26, 2014 Ive got an REI sub kilo 0° bag I've used for years on backpacking trips and road camps alike. Cost about $350 at the time but it stuffs down to the size of a football and only weighs about 2 lbs. Can't beat it.
