Paying for a San Carlos Tag

Recommended Posts

So a couple months ago I asked, why pay so much and wait in line for a San carlos deer tag, when you can shoot a great buck down south, with a leftover tag,If you want to deal with the drug smugglers,.lets see all the pics, Hoss killed a good one did anyone else?

Looks like he might have been guided by a Native, any diy hunters kill anything over 110?

Not every single hunter that hunts whitetail is a member on this site. Not to mention that not every hunter wants to post pictures. I would imagine that there were good deer taken on the reservation this year. Tons less pressure and great whitetail country.

As far as the rut hunt. I have seen total of 19 bucks taken on the Rez through photos and other guides. Mostly DIY hunters and honestly didn't see any 110+ bucks taken this year. Saw one crazy medusa buck that looked beastly but it was just a head pic and couldn't determine size but looked good. A lot of 95-108 bucks taken as far as what I've seen through pics and stories shared. Did hear and always hear about the big ones getting away. In Nov. I know personally 2 hunters that smoked a 110 and 115. Which they spiked and hunted hard for 5 days without coming back to the truck. The biggest buck I saw during our hunt was the 120 shot in unit C. And also the buck I shot in B during my tribal hunt which grossed 124. I can't blame the weather but it was extremely warmer than usual and didn't see a normal rut year. But that's just my observation. I've heard others doing really well and seeing good ruttin. I know a lot of hunters don't care to post pics on the site. There were alot of 105-108 class buck taken for sure though.

Seldom Drawn you might be on to something. We hunted 11 days and never saw a shooter. Over the past few years we have seen far better deer and invested far fewer days with our leftover S. AZ tags. We too went to the extremes to get in remote country with zero hunting pressure Gorgeous country and we were hunting so it's hard to complain, but it's some pretty expensive tag soup.

Congrats to Hoss for flat getting it done up there this year. Good work to you and your hunters.

I know Hoss is a guide, he had more to do with this kill the the guy that killed it,the biggest I heard of killed other then this buck ,was 109 that to me seems like a h@ll of a lot of money for a buck you can kill with a left over tag down south.

Hoss,

Thanks for your response, not really sure why out2hunt said way to keep it positive,I know many on this site are very sensitive i just asked a question, I don't sugar coat my posts, I just tell it how i feel mostly from from experience.if you want to have a chance for a second hunt and can afford to pay for the res more power to you.

Ha!!! Hoss is the guide........... pay attention!

Hunt Harder,Thanks for letting me know, that I will try and pay attention.

I love living, hunting, guiding, working on the San Carlos Rez, and a proud Apache Tribal Member... and of course hunting the Rez is costly.... and beautiful country... but the main mistake is some hunters from either out of state and out of town believe..... is....we have 110 bucks everywhere..... like we are going to see one everyday during the hunt.... This is absolutely not true..... honestly Ive seen about a dozen 110+ bucks in my hunting career which started when I was a teenager. And that's just me personally scouting and hunting the infamous grey ghost. This year I worked really hard to find 2 great bucks that grossed the 120 mark, and it wasn't easy at all. I have hunted state many times and have seen 100+ bucks as well..... I think its just personal preference where guys want to hunt... whether is a longer hunt...less pressure... or just enjoying God's creation and hunt for the enjoyment... whatever the reason..... its still just hunting no matter where you are in the world.... Like Ive said in a previous post about broadheads.... its not the broadhead its the hunter... same as hunting..... It doesn't matter where you are at.... its the hunter.... But either way you see it...its all about the love of coues deer.

I know everytime I head to the rez to go predator hunting I see critters EVERYWHERE I look compared to state land. There may not be many 110+ bucks but I bet on average you are seeing 10+ bucks a day. I have been really thinking about buying a tag on the rez or heading to Mexico. Sounds like a lot of fun.

dude i'm not sure what your deal is with the rez? some people have the money and choose to do it, just like some people go to mexico. just because you spend alot of $$ doesn't guarantee you anything.a guy at my work has been to mexico twice and doesn't have a 100 '' buck. did he have a good time and see new country and alot of deer, you bet. like hoss said, it is a longer season, alot less pressure and some great country, but you still have to work for it. i think from now on i'm going to pick up leftover tags down south, there must be 100'' bucks under every cedar tree down there ;) ha ha
