mbiewer Report post Posted January 23, 2014 Frustrated on a turkey hunt in unit 8 on a turkey hunt one fall my buddy was looking for something to fill his weekend. After hearing about my opening day woes Bob made plans to come up for saturday. Enter the scene of a mutual friend and coworker (to both of us) also in our camp with a tag. Dean had a side conversation with bob about making the hunt. Bob was skeptical Dean was even going to bother. When i informed dean that bob was on his way saturday morning, The conversation at lunch before bob was set to arrive talked about being "over geared" for trips. (Basically bringing too much unnecessary junk). Long story short, we decided to prank Bob by sitting in our boots, skivies, and gun belts when he rolled into camp. Only problem was, we were camped up a ways from a dead end that had a fishing spot and outhouse on it, and apparently saturday mid day is a popular time at the roads end. We waved at a few random trucks that didnt happen to be Bob. On the positive side, no one seemed to mess with anything at our camp that trip.
Elkaddict Report post Posted January 23, 2014 On a pig hunt many years ago, we parked the truck and took a short trail to a big glassing rock. On the trail, that we had used many times before, was as a 2' boulder right in the middle of the trail. As we sat on the glassing rock we kept commenting on the rock in the middle of the trail. After a couple of hours and not seeing anything we decided to move. As we walked by the rock in the trail our curiosity got the best of us and we rolled the rock over. There was something in a hole under the rock, turns out it was a human head. Freaked us out! Way before cell phones so we went into New River to call the sheriffs dept.. They kept telling us it was probably an old Indian skull from a burial ground. After waiting for several hours they finally sent 1 deputy out to check it out. After taking him to the site and he looked in the hole he freaked out too! Long story but the outcome was a guy killed his wife and her boyfriend and cut them up and scattered them around the desert. They found some women's bones and we found the guys head. This was off the Table Mesa road about 15 miles east of I-17 , so if you're out that way keep your eyes open. They never found most of them. Edge Report post Posted January 23, 2014 Back when I was knee high to a grasshopper, the family was up at Reservation Lake, hunting trout. It was noonish and dad had the charcoal grill going. It's not a big lake and on the opposite side from us, a bear walked out of the woods and waded into the lake. We all watched in wonderment as that bear tried to catch his lunch by tossing fish up onto the shore as we human siblings waited for our burgers and the parents cooked steaks. The bear wasn't having much luck trout tossing but he did get a good whiff of our grill. So he started swimming. "Oh, aint nature grand?" Mom commented as that bear started dog paddling straight towards us. Narratives such as; "He will never make it, it's too far across the lake." and "Don't overreact, he's just out for a swim." Soon gave way to..."Jean, get the kids into the camper, I'll save the food." Mom safely stowed us kids into the overhead bunk as dad joined us in the camper, carrying the grill with him. In true caveman form, he wasn't giving up that meat without a fight. Meanwhile the bear was just coming ashore with a big grin on his face, some 30' away and shook off like a dog. He cantered straight up to the back window of the camper, stood on his hind legs and peered in. Dad had unholstered his 1911 and was holding it point blank at the bears face. Mom was pleading with dad not to shoot unless he had to, dad was telling mom to "shut-up." I think that bear sensed a bad outcome for him if he pressed the issue at our camper, so he sauntered over to the camper beside us. Those trout hunters had just left the screen door closed and they were still out on the lake..... The bear had no trouble pushing the screen door in, then went ahead and completely trashed their camper. The bear reemerged from the camper with a Tupperware container of fried chicken, which he pounced on till it popped. Then that bear grabbed a drumstick and laid on his back and held that chicken leg between his front paws and munched away. But all fun must end and the sound of the neighbors boat coming on shore, sent the bear scurrying away with as much chicken as he could fit into his mouth. We exited the camper with food intact but a little dizzy from all the fumes. Dad had saved our lunch but nearly poisoned us in the process. Love ya, dad.

Snapshot Report post Posted January 24, 2014 I tipped over my camp garbage can that had a very large, and very alive, skunk in it. Almost stepped on a rattlesnake curled up in the middle of a sand wash. It looked like a big pile of cow poop. Yes......White men can jump. Not too much crazy stuff in my hunting. Mocha1545 Report post Posted January 24, 2014 Years ago my buddy and I were hunting deer in the Pinto Creek area. We saw a good buck drop down into a deep dark canyon. We got on the ridge and glassed our butts off. Nothing. I took out my sling and flung a few rocks into the canyon trying to spook him out. We could hooves on the rocks but no buck. My buddy upped the game and tipped a huge boulder down the canyon. It gained some serious momentum and was taking small trees with it. Suddenly a herd of about 30 cows goes shooting out of the canyon back towards the ranch. We waited all weekend to get a good cussing by the rancher but it never happened. Never did see that buck again.
