BackwoodsHunter Report post Posted January 15, 2014 Great ideas, think I'm gonna try a 2 nighter relatively close distance before I try a longer trip much deeper in so I can figure out what I need and how it all works.
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted January 16, 2014 One more item I forgot is I put some iodine tabs in my filter bag, always have and my kaytadin filter broke one trip and I used the iodine for 2 days, saved my hunt trip. Also why I run the MSR now, it has a blead off valve when it gets clogged it spits out the bleeder, my other one just blew out the check valve and died. I also bring the silt stopper from MSR for bad water, I have filtered water from brown almost empty mud water holes and filter clogs quick so the silt stopper helps alot. REI is a great place to shop, they use all the items they carry and can tell you real world info.
rclouse79 Report post Posted January 16, 2014 I thought I would post my new favorite hunting lunch. On a tortilla put some mayo (packet from a fast food place), two pepperjack string cheeses, and one of the flavored foil tuna packs. My favorite are hickory smoked and lemon pepper. When you open up the tuna tip it upside down and squeeze it to drain any liquid first. These are good enough to eat all the time, but I don't want to get sick of them before hunting season. rclouse79 Report post Posted January 16, 2014 Another item I added this last year that I love is a wyoming saw. If you are going to make a fire it is worth its weight in gold. I also cut the horns off with the bone saw blade, which saves me carrying the weight of the head back.
Scooter Report post Posted January 16, 2014 I think Mountain House is the best way to go with food. It's delicious, comes in resealable bags, it's light as a feather, and it doesn't give me the gastric issues that MRE's can provide. Trust me, in my current job I've eaten lots of MRE's and they do taste pretty good- but the stomach issues are undeniable. It doesn't take much water to eat Mountain House for 3-4 days maybe more than a week. I could probably get by with carrying an extra 60-100oz. bladder for my hydration pack. It only takes 10oz. of water to cook those. Most of them say 12-14oz, but you can boil them with 8-10oz per bag and be just fine. Remember, the normal size MH meals will feed you for an entire day. Eat 'em right from the bag, no cookware is needed other than your boiling pot. Most of your pack weight should be for water and shelter. If you want to do a bivy hunt I'd suggest buying 4-6 of those reflective emergency blankets/bags and a small roll of Duct Tape. They can insulate you in LOTS of different ways and they're re-useable for many things. My favorite way is to double it up and tape it to the sleeping mat. No heat escaping and no cold coming up from the ground! another way is to use them as curtains on the inside of your tent to reflect the heat down and keep the cold from getting into the vents. Can't go outside and not have 550 cord. 150ft will get you pretty far. If you don't need all the strings inside they can be pulled out and used separately. 550 cord is just an awesome item. A good set of pruners. Gerber pruners to be exact. Not only can you build a blind in no-time at all, the can be used to make a shelter, or clip through a pelvic bone if you still use the gutting method. BackwoodsHunter Report post Posted January 16, 2014 Thanks for the huge Amout of feedback, I think I'll try the mountain house meals after all the good things I hear about on here. And I'll probably carry my one man tent, just to feel a little better in this cool weather and save my hammoc for August.

rabidApache Report post Posted January 16, 2014 I make my own "pemmican" food/energy bars. Its easy to make and lasts for weeks. My Apache "powerbar" is deer jerky minced/hammered into fine powdered jerky. Its then mixed with ground acorn and roasted pinion nuts and hand formed into cakes. I dry'em and wrap in paper towel. Awesome stuff for the back country....high calories packed into a small package and tastes great. There's plenty of info on the web if your interested in making your "pemmican". Carry a good Titanium or stainless pot w/ lid. When back at camp boil water to purify should anything happen to your Water purifier.
CouesBuckhunter Report post Posted January 16, 2014 I try to get what I need from the land as much as I can so that I don't have to carry as much and I keep some extra stuff in my pack at all times in case of a bad mechanical injury that would prevent me from getting back out. As warm as it is right now, finding food isn't much of a problem.
