My first thought was... "JEEZ do they have any idea how much 10 miles of pipe rail fence is going to cost?"

Total closure is 30 acres. Less than a Fry's shopping center. I have no issues with rehabilitating desert habitat destroyed by OHV users.

-------------------

(MESA, Ariz.)Tonto National Forest officials are seeking public comment on a proposal to rehabilitate and make improvements to areas of the Mesa Ranger District that are primarily used for Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation.

Approximately 30 acres of land that has been highly impacted by OHV use will be regenerated by planting cactus and other native plants to restore these areas to a natural state. Approximately 10 miles of pipe rail fencing or boulders would be used.

The proposed project is located along four heavily used forest roads on the Mesa Ranger District, Tonto National Forest, in Maricopa and Pinal counties. Public comments are being accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.

Details of the proposed action can be found on the Tonto National Forest website: www.fs.fed.us/nepa/nepa_project_exp.php?project=42089. For more information, call the Mesa Ranger District at 480-610-3300.

I know nothing of this situation, but the first thing that comes to mind is what cost for what benefit. How can we possibly expect to make the whole national forest into an un-touched park? Maybe this isn't the right place for it but shouldn't the guy that wants to go tear around on a dirt bike have somewhere they can do it? At least it is getting used for something.

And yes I agree with Seldom Drawn, if it involves the forest service it is a dog and pony show with the outcome already pre-determined.

Pretty sure that 30 acres can be surrounded with a lot less than a mile of fence. They show a lot of area getting closed off in the maps shown in the link.

Remember what they did along Usery and the Lower Salt years ago? This is also going to involve road closures and fines for driving on existing roads from the responses I read on the G&F Facebook page that were posted yesterday.
