Mearns Hunt with Scottyboy

Recommended Posts

Had the pleasure of hunting a couple of days down south with Scottyboy, Firstcoues, Scott's bud Rich, and Scott's father Charles. Had three dogs, including Scott's Penny and Virgil, and my Rica. Rustled up several coveys Friday and Saturday. Pretty country to hunt in with the oak covered draws and plenty of grass in the draws. Was nice to have a bird hold tight, rather than having to chase after the running and flighty Gambel demon birds.

The passel of Mearns from Saturday. Pic'ed is Scott's LC Smith sxs .410 Lots of immature birds due to the good rains this summer.

Scott, Penny the Brittany, and Virgil. Penny would amble and hunt the base of the slopes. Virgil would be with my dog, usulally too far to be seen out front in the tall grass in the draws. Virgil thows up a pretty point with an upright tail. Scott should have some good pics to post.

Good to see you guys had some success out there.

My dad and I were down hunting mearns this last weekend but my dog is just getting a little old now, and my dads dog is still in the training proccess. We did manage to find 2 coveys and each get 1 bird. Still worth it though.

Here I am with my dog Heidi

dang Christian you are a redneck!!! love the shirt hahaha ( just messin)

Scott and i and his old man managed to see a buck that would have been dang CLOSE to B&C about 20 seconds before doug topped over on the ridge with his truck. this buck was a stud! typical 4x4 frame man he was sweet! we also put antlers on two other bucks from about 250 yards witht he naked eye and if i can put antlers on a deer from that far, it must have been nice!

Scott and i did well friday, scott i forgot, who got the most birds? :P

the first covey we busted flew out from under my feet when i made eye contact with one of the birds! we did manage to get a few big, mature males along with a bunch of young juveys. had a blast like always, looking forward to when we can do the slam on my winter break!

This is the only pic of the pup I have as of now. This is my dad with his new pup and the quail we got.

He will be a good looking dog that is for sure. He was a really fuzzy face and a somewhat sleek coat.

Looks like the pup had a bad hair day! <_<

Glad he got into some birds though, as that is what is important!

Nice looking pup. Same line as Heidi? How old is he and how is he doing on the quail hunts?

No different lines. Heidi is a funky dog and Gus (the pup) is from Dakota Wirehairs http://www.wrtc.com/arby1/

He is 5 months and he is running really well. Still learning about the mearns. He pointed his first mearns this weekend so he is doing alright. Hopefully he will be going good next season.

Had a good time this weekend.. Got into plenty of birds and the mutts did really good, considering the dry conditions.. I believe we had 16 coveys for the 2 days. Not too shabby!! Got to hunt with my old man again, Casey, Doug, and one of my best buds, Rich.

Here are a few pics I snapped over the course of the two days...

1st covey of the '06 season!! And Penny NAILED them to the ground!! Virgil honoring..

Casey with a mess of Mearns from the first days hunt..

A mature male with Casey's O/U.. I like that combo.. nice guns and Mearns roosters. Does it get any better??

messin' around with the camera.. i like how this pic came out. A few birds from the second day's hunt..

INTENSITY....

TEAMWORK.... right after I took this quick snapshot, I was trying to move on in and get a shot. Ended up busting my butt and right when I fell, the covey split!! That hillside was STEEP!

here is what Mearns country does to a flat-lander who lives at sea level in TX!! My Dad was ahuffin' and apuffin' this entire weekend!! But he made it! I took this pic from the top of the canyon, looking back at him.. laughing while he was suckin' wind!! I thought it was funny, but he didn't at the time!!

I'll be headed south from now to the end of season about once a week.. this is what I live for out here in AZ.

thanks for lookin!!

man we had a blast! and when scott says that hill side was steep, thats an understatement! him and i got off of that hill side as soon as we got on! and those birds held for about 2 minutes of the dogs pointing but as soon as scott fell they knew to get out of there! best part is, he got one of the birds!

Scott, had a blast like always! (seeing that booner buck didn hurt either!)
