TAM Report post Posted January 3, 2014 Just got back from a week long December hunt in Mexico with my three boys and two buddies. My boys were hoping for the opportunity to shoot some javelina but there aren't many on the ranches we hunt and in a week of hunting we didn't see a single pig. Regardless we had a great time and got to look at some beautiful country. From what I saw the bigger bucks weren't showing any signs of rutting and didn't seem to have a care in the world. On our second night there I found a real nice buck feeding in some mesquites. We tried to make a move to get a closer look at him and perhaps even shoot him but he just seemed to disappear. As I was trying to relocate him I turned up a group of three bucks about 3/4 of a mile down the ridge and one of them looked pretty good. The next morning we went back to the same spot looking for the bucks I had seen the night before and couldn't find any of them so we hiked down the ridge about a mile so we could look into a small bowl. It's pretty open country in this area and as soon as I looked in the bowl I saw a lone buck feeding in the middle of it. His head was in a mesquite tree but I could see he had big body and when his head cleared the branches I caught a glimpse of the drop tines and knew he was a shooter. After letting my boys each take a quick peak through the 15's we bailed off the ridge to cut the distance. When we got to a knob that was about 500 yards we picked him up again moving towards a thick patch of trees where we lost sight of him. At that point we sat on him for an hour giving him time to settle down and then went back to the ranch house for some lunch and a nap. After a couple of hours we headed back out to the hill above him putting us right at 200 yards directly across from the thick patch where he went to bed. I was picking apart the small patch of trees and brush for about 20 minutes before I finally looked just outside the trees where he was bedded in the open in the shade of a tree. At that point I knew it was game on and quietly got my boys to help set up and make the shot! The buck is one of the coolest looking bucks I've ever seen in all my years of hunting coues deer and to top it off I got to share the experience with my three boys! I can't wait to get back out there in 3 weeks during the rutting action to look for another great buck!

kidso Report post Posted January 3, 2014 Nice buck! Do the "locals" down there who you work with ever come across any jaguars during their operations? Do they ever tell you jaguar stories? Just curious if they come across the jags more commonly than we do in southern Arizona.
