mbiewer Report post Posted January 2, 2014 So we took a leap of faith this year. Put in for 20B despite not knowing anything or having been in the unit at all. We (there's 4 of us) got drawn. I recently introduced my buddy to hunting, and we got skunked on turkey and whitetail. Despite no beginners luck for Steve (or my abillity to mooch beginners luck from him, lol)... he came back for more. After staring at the maps online, (acme mapper, az access) and doing a quick search, im kinda clueless as to where to begin scouting. First off, Can anyone here recommend a good "paper map" source for 20 B? I got spoiled with my flatline for 22n. Anyone have ny expereince wih the "hunt unit maps"? Anyone have any hints othe than "glass, glass, glass some more" for the area? ha ha. thats a learned method already. thanks for any and all info. Kinda hoping 3rd times the charm for Steve, before he gets accustomed to tag soup.... even if its on stink pig. Luckily for him (and us) he is pretty new to az so exploring a new part of the state is just as rewarding. thanks Matty
khmer6 Report post Posted January 2, 2014 Check out azgfd site on the unit. They are still accurate information from there. Other than the areas listed on their site, not much else unless you go into the real thicket of the central/northern region of the unit. I have the same tag, will probably do the first few days only
AmericanThunder Report post Posted January 2, 2014 The hunt unit maps are ok, but nowhere near as good as the Flatlines. I use them as my backup when I hunt units that the Flatlines don't offer. The National Forest maps are pretty decent too.
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted January 2, 2014 the national geographic trails maps are good and i pair that with the blm land ownership map for blm. i hunted that unit last year and found where 2 herds were living but never closed the deal. i was in the southern portion of 20b and land was locked up quite a bit. blm map helps. khmer6 Report post Posted January 3, 2014 what's included in the BLM maps? Does it just show the boundaries or are there trails and what nots as well? I tried to find the GIS info, but looks like they redesigned their site with Drupal and its broken links.
MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted January 3, 2014 blm is a decent map and shows regular detail like roads trais but most important is private land, northern part of 20b is no big deal but down around lake pleasant and up by yarnell there is alot of landlock on the main access points. i have seen javi sign going in on most of the main roads all over that unit. hoghntr Report post Posted January 3, 2014 Pigs all over 20b but man mucho private property and residents behind pleasant dont like to allow trespassers no matter how you bribe them. also beware of the no trespass signs with machine guns on them, and if you come accross the straw house just put your foot down hard on gas pedal and duck your head! tjhunt2 Report post Posted January 3, 2014 Can't wait to hear how your hunt turns out Matt. Shoot straight my friend. Wish I could help on your hunt but never step foot in the unit that I can remember. TJ
