I have purchased two 12 gauge shotguns over the last 6 months for my boys.

 

We went out and did some clay shooting today. The most recent shotgun has me worried. Maybe somebody out there has more experience with shotguns can help me out.

 

When we shoot the gun, pump action, it throws the pump back automatically ejecting the empty spent shell.

 

Only if I make a concentrated effort does the pump action stay in the forward position.

 

Never encountered such a thing but I don't shoot a lot of shotgun either.

 

Normal?? Not normal???

 

Should I take it back to Sportsmans???

Not normal. I doubt if Sportmans will be able to help you out, usually with firearms stuff you have to work directly with the manufacturer. I'd get Winchester on the horn.

My dad bought a Mossberg as a self defense gun a couple years ago that whenever we shoot buckshot or slugs the action does this. The manufacture said that it was normal and this was a feature to absorb recoil or something, total bs in my opinion.

shoot it without holding onto the forearm, and see if it still comes back after shot. It should release, but not throw the pump back automatically. If it does, you can go back to sportsmans, and they will help you send your firearm back to Winchester. If it was just bought, they will pick up the shipping charge as well.

Absolutely 100% normal for the SXP. I have the same gun and was surprised at first, but ultimately came to love this. It takes a little getting used to but once you get the hang of it you can shoot crazy fast. Perfect for shooting clay doubles. Check out this guys review of the gun to see what I mean.

I had a Winchester speedpump slug gun that did the same thing. Almost as good as a semi auto. Don't think anything is wrong with it.

Just got off the phone with Winchester.......it in fact is a "feature" for rapid speed pump and considered to be a normal function of this model.

 

I guess my only issue is I have two of the same model bought within 4 months of each other and the first one I bought does not cycle in this manner.

 

I was also told it might depend on the loads I am shooting but when we were shooting yesterday I had both shotguns going pulling shells out of the same box, one gun cycled and the other didn't.

 

When I say cycle, maybe I should say half cycle......pump action all the way back after pulling the trigger.

I have the Benelli Nova and wish it did that. Mine is the opposite. Sometimes I have a hard time getting it to cycle.
