Scooter Report post Posted December 26, 2013 I have loads worked up for a few different bullets... I have a HAM tag. My deer load is a 240gr XTP mag sabot with 100gr of IMR white hots. I also have had really good groups with the same charge and a 245gr Powerbelt Aerolite- but I'm not sure about terminal effects on PB bullets. I also could buck the inline trend and use my 'ol TC Tree Hawk with 90gr of 777 and a 320gr Maxi Hunter... Decisions decisions...

Flatlander Report post Posted December 26, 2013 I am shooting 295 grain PB and two pellets of white hot. I don't think I would be worried about terminal effects on a pig. Anything from a .50 cal should be terminal enough.
Scooter Report post Posted December 27, 2013 Flatlander, how are you liking the white Hots??? I like them, but I always wonder if I should be using a magnum charge in that online...
Coach Report post Posted December 27, 2013 From my limited experience, in-line muzzies are very finicky. When I first got mine, I found a load that shot great - even 3 shot groups under 4 inches at 300 yards. Hornady changed their sabot to make it easier to load and my groups grew considerably. I've had to try lots of different combinations to get anywhere near that. I wouldn't worry much about terminal effects of the bullets on a pig, as Flatlander pointed out. But it has to be accurate. 3 50 grain pellets of pyrodex or triple 7 seem to be too much from what I've seen. Dropping down to just two improves accuracy a lot. You might even look at switching to loose powder up to around 120 - 130 grains.

The white hots are great. I have been keeping it to 100 grain because as Coach pointed out its a lot tougher to get the groups tight, it may have something to do with all that smoke and the way I flinch like a step child in K Mart. Even with a 295 gr PB in there 100 gr seems to be plenty. I keep my shots to 150 yds, not that it helps. I still can't hit anything that breathes.

ajohunter Report post Posted January 2, 2014 I shoot a 250gr hornady Saboted SST with 100gr of Blackhorn 209 and a Federal 209A primer. Gets great groups out of my CVA Optima. And put the whammy on my mule deer last month with a clean pass through at 170 yards.
