.22lr for fox

Recommended Posts

Been using my .223 and/or shotgun, but I think I could actually get it done with my 10/22 and some Winchester Varmint HE's. How many of you have killed a furbearer with a .22lr rifle??? I'm not even entertaining taking any shots over 60yds. My 10/22 shoots one ragged hole at 50yds so accuracy is not an issue.

I feel it's to small. I feel 22 mag is fine, some will actually say it is one of the best. But way to many Cals. more efficient and fur friendly available today. To have to put up with excessive runners.

Take care, Willie

I've killed a pile of coyotes with a 22 and normal Remington hollow points and subsonics. Most have been shots to the lungs with about 50% of the shots requiring a follow up shot. I use a ruger 10/22 so the follow up shots are always very quick. I can't imagine how a 22 isn't ideal for a fox. Especially if you're accurate with it.

I dropped a Javelina in its tracks with a shot from a .22LR with standard Federal brick hollow points. I would say shots under 50 yds would be just fine. I have seen a few tassel eared gray squirrels that would rival the size of a gray fox.

Not smart to post that you killed a Javelina with an illegal method of take....

It may have been legal in the past or in another State.

Killed quite a few coyotes with both solids and hollow points. The solids actually put them down quicker. They seem to follow the path of least resistance and do a lot of internal damage, also penetrate shoulders better. The only stinger I put to the shoulder of a big coyote left a pile of hair and a permanent limp.

yeah that's what I figured, a higher velocity 22LR hollow point like stingers (32gr), velocitors (40gr), or the Winchester Varmint HE's (37gr) should be plenty for a head shot or even a good solid high neck shot at 60yds and under on a gray fox. I don't think I would attempt to place the bullet anywhere else like the lungs or shoulders and expect that it would kill it. The bullet weight just isn't there for a solid bone hit outside of the head area and I'd be a fool to risk it.

That's what I use all the time. Now I wouldn't shoot a bobcat with it but I've taken yotes out to 150 and dropped them within 20yards. Last one was right at 150 and he dropped like a sack of potatoes. Drops fox like a champ even on a dead run at 50. Cheap round and they do work. I shoot the federal hollow points because that's all the Walmart near me carries but the old thunderbolt ammunition I had dropped coyotes in there tracks when placed behind the shoulder like it should.

Yep my dad killed Javi's a very long time ago with a 22 short and 22lr. He said one fell down deader than a doornail, bullet to the heart. Surely I wold not advise it, as I am the guy in another post on the other end of the spectrum (300 RUM).

I think a fox would be fine as they are not much bigger than a big jack rabbit. No one ever got scolded for killy jacks with a 22. If you are a good shot they will die all the same and last I check there is no degree of more dead that I have seen.

exxxxxactly! skin out a grey and skin out a jack next to each other. Pretty much the same size...some antelope jacks are even bigger...

Can you kill them with a .22lr, without doubt. (I've seen deer poached with .22lr back in Oklahoma.)

Is it ethical, no.

In my opinion you should use enough gun to kill the animal efficiently and quickly everytime.

Why do you want to move from a .223 or shotgun to a 22lr?

When I was a kid I saw the rancher next door to us kill a 600 lb cow (it did belong to him)with one shot to the head witha 22lr so I think they get deeper then most will give it. I know for us 4 boys whom where just hunting rabbits with them gave that little gun alot more respect then we had. It was all of 30 feet away but a cow skull is hard and it dumped her right now so I would say it is good on fox and bobcats.

A bobcat can go a long ways even with a shot by bow and arrow, in the boiler room... so I wouldn't recommend .22lr for bobcat, if you want to recover for sure. I wouldn't even recommend head shots because if your even a little bit off and miss the brain, that cat may ultimately suffer from a bad hit. I know people that have not hit the mark and shot fox and yotes in the jaw or eye and not the brain. We all know what fate they ended up having. It is an iffy and unethical shot for most.
