.300 Win Mag on Javelina...

Anyone ever take a Javelina with a .300 win mag? I usually take my AR on Javi hunts and shots are usually under 100yds. Was wondering if anyone has ever taken a Javi with a 300 win mag and what the result was? I would guess excessive damage to meat? Would a certain bullet/grain do better for these pigs if I wanted to use the .300? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Dead is dead I suppose never used a 300 win for pigs but each to his own. Do you reload ?

No I don't reload at the moment. Hopefully wife, I mean SANTA! Brings me a press!

That's what I figured. Just wanted to see if I could take what I have at the moment. Do you recall what grain/bullet he was using?

I shot one with a Weatherby 300 win mag @ 326 yds with 150 gr. Hit him in the front shoulder, small entry and slightly bigger exit. I specificlly took it out to do some long distance shooting, no problems. Have fun with it.

I used a 180 grn Barnes copper bullet, small exit wound but a bit of bruising

if i remember correctly it was a 180gr NP. its been years but im almost positive thats what it was.

300 Win Mag for javelina? What ate you banking on a close shot??? I'm going straight to the .338 Ultra this year! Anything within 600 will be considered too close and let walk.

A .300 Winchester Magnum is only a .30-06 pushing its bullet faster, and lots of javelinas are killed every year with .30-06s. If there is excessive meat damage it is because the bullet is too frangible. In 1983, I bought a .458 Win Mag to use for buffalo on my first trip to Africa and shot a jackrabbit and used it for my javelina hunt that year to try it out. Both shots were under 50 yards and neither animal was "blown to pieces." As I remember it, there apparently was very little -- if any -- expansion because the entrance and exit holes of the 500-grain bullets were about the same.

Agreed. I just shot a Coues with the .338 ultra a couple weeks ago at 450 yds. The 250 gr. bullet went in and out with zero meat loss.

Small fast frangible bullets cause way more damage. Especially if they hit bone and explode. I shot one last year with a 7 mag.

 

7mm entrance. Quarter sized exit.

Thanks to everyone for all the input! So if I were to decide to take out the .300 win mag this feb., what would be the best factory round/grain I could buy to use on a javi? 180gr?
