Recommended Posts

I am thinking about getting a tag and was wondering if a 26-06 too much gun. I have never hunted these animals before. I also have a Sendero 22-250 but is is a bit heavy. And my buddy is going and only has a 270. Thanks for the information.

NOT AT ALL. If you can kill one with a 50 cal. muzzle loader than you are certainly good.

My brothers have shot several javelina with our 30-06. Just don't aim for the shoulder or you'll ruin all the meat. Center of mass will knock those little things down and not ruin the meat.

i have heard of people using ought sixes and even magnum cartridges because that was all they had. if you take the standard deer shot you might ruin most of the meat. a spine or head shot might do it, thought i have heard these guys are tough to take multiple rounds to the head and still run around.

Best gun to use for hogalina is your deer rifle, what ever caliber it is! Smaller target, builds confidence. I have killed them with my .257 wby and my .223 and the piggies were all dead as can be! The .257 wby actually caused less meat damage then the .223's although the type of bullets were quite different (TTSX Vs Vmax/Ballistic Tips).

My son killed his on the jr hunt with a 243 using 100gr core lokt. It blew a huge hole in it. This next year he is going to use a 7mm.

I plan on using 150gr 30-06 because that is all I have. I'm looking to pick up something smaller if I can for Javi hunts

See the other thread about using a .300 Win Mag on javelinas. Bullet quality and placement is more important than caliber. I've shot javelinas with just about every caliber from .22 rimfire magnum to .458 Win Mag, as well as with round balls from .45, .50 and .54 caliber muzzleloaders. If the bullet expands easily and hits major bone it will do major damage. As for head shots, a javelina's brain is small and far back on its skull. Shooting a javelina in the center of its head from the side will break its nose and/or jaw, but won't always kill it.
