khmer6 Report post Posted December 19, 2013 i have heard of people using ought sixes and even magnum cartridges because that was all they had. if you take the standard deer shot you might ruin most of the meat. a spine or head shot might do it, thought i have heard these guys are tough to take multiple rounds to the head and still run around. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted December 19, 2013 Best gun to use for hogalina is your deer rifle, what ever caliber it is! Smaller target, builds confidence. I have killed them with my .257 wby and my .223 and the piggies were all dead as can be! The .257 wby actually caused less meat damage then the .223's although the type of bullets were quite different (TTSX Vs Vmax/Ballistic Tips). Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

billrquimby Report post Posted December 20, 2013 See the other thread about using a .300 Win Mag on javelinas. Bullet quality and placement is more important than caliber. I've shot javelinas with just about every caliber from .22 rimfire magnum to .458 Win Mag, as well as with round balls from .45, .50 and .54 caliber muzzleloaders. If the bullet expands easily and hits major bone it will do major damage. As for head shots, a javelina's brain is small and far back on its skull.
