Anyone hunt Brown/Grizzly in Alaska?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone on here has hunted brown/grizzly bears in Alaska. I would like to start looking to different options. Alaska G&F is about as easy to navigate as ours so I was wondering if anyone has any tips or personal experience they would like to share? I have heard there is a draw & over the counter etc tags and would love to hear someones advice or expertise. Or maybe who to contact to get started planning a trip?

Thanks in advance for any takers. PM if you wish.

Alaska requires that all nonresidents use a guide while hunting brown/ Grizzly bear, Dall Sheep, and Mountain Goat. Your best bet is to start researching guides and then let them direct you through the regulations.

I grew up in southeast alaska and have killed three. You do need a guide and there are many areas to hunt. The biggest bears have always came from kodiak island but there are big browns all along the coast. They are hunted in the spring right out of the den which give you the best coats but can be hard to time. To early, no bears. To late, no bears. They hang right on the edge of the snow melt. Hunting in the fall during the salmon run can bring fat bears with short coats but timing is also important cause once the fall rains come and the streams flood, out go the salmon and the bears go to the woods. Great animal to hunt but like everything else takes some research.

I have looked a little into it, from what I figured it's going to cost 20k (this includes tip) for a hunt. I don't know anyone over there and also heard that you need a guide for nonresidents.

I will be making the trip here in the next few years hopefully. Good topic ready to hunt, I'm also curious what others have experienced. This is my Dream Hunt to hunt Browns in Alaska. To heck with Africa! :-)

+1.

Unless you can talk an immediate family member (brother, sister, dad and mom...can't recall on grandparents) into moving to Alaska you'd better start saving too.

In some areas, guides are booking 3 years out and most start upwards of 15K.

If you are set on a brown/grizz, I'd suggest going to the Safari Club International Convention in Las Vegas in Feb 2014 or 2015 and talking to as many outfitters as you can and decide what type of hunt experience you want and which outfitter can provide it.

I personally think brown/grizz has become one of the more expensive hunts in the last 10 years, at least doubling in that time frame. Dall Sheep and goat hunts are still fairly reasonable, respective to the same time frame and compared to bears.

Cheaper solution is always the Alaskan black bear, DIY or guided. Inland or coastal. If you go in with one or two other hunters for DIY you might expect to pay around 2K each for everything (plus or minus depending on airfare, location, etc ) guided will run you around 3-6k depending on what options you decide on. I could be off on my estimates and others should chime in.

If I had to choose between dall, bear or goat. I'd go bear because I think it the cost will only continue to climb but that's just a guess.

I am waiting for Wy, ID, and / or MT to open a grizz season. Then do a wolf + grizz combo hunt.

I am with you on that one. My dream hunt is a Grizzly/Moose combo. Hopefully I will get that chance.
