peloncillo Report post Posted November 16, 2006 I'm back from my unit29 hunt and New Mexico unit24 hunt. I was able to take my six year old son with me for the opening day here in AZ. I've taken him scouting with me before but this was the first time hunting with him. We climbed a ways up a canyon and sat on a large rock outcropping and waited for daylight. We saw two does and two fawns feeding 300 yards across from us. He was totally excited and was getting me pumped up too. I did see a good white horned buck through the 15s over 1000 yards out and he wasn't sticking around. We heard a deer snort in the canyon bottom and a doe and a small fork came running out. I don't know what spooked them but I piled the little guy up at 240 yards. Andrew, my son, had never really shown much interest in hunting but now talks about it and I see him looking at my hunting magazines and he wanted to keep the antlers of our first deer together so I cut them off and he keeps it in his room. I went on to New Mexico and let me tell you that is some brushy country. I didn't even see a legal buck the three days I was there. I had a real good time hunting this year and am looking forward to hunting with my sons in the future. I was able to take the my biggest bear ever this year (20 4/16) but I'm just as proud of that liitle fork horn. Good luck to all of you still out hunting and I still have a Sonora coues in Jan. azpackhorse Report post Posted November 22, 2006 Great job Keven, The boy is off to a great start, I can still remember the thrill I felt when I got to go on an elk or deer hunt when I was as young as your boy. It is a feeling of pure enjoyment that has stayed with me my entire life thereafter. I have drawn on that feeling many times when times were not so enjoyable, you are not only building memories for your son, you are building strength to sustain in the adult world. Keep up the great work,
