Winchester 284

Recommended Posts

I've learned that it's darn near impossible to find ammunition for this gun. This has made my decision to get into reloading. I have a couple friends that have helped me get started. We have about 60 pieces of brass and wanted to see if anyone has any experience with loads for this gun and places to pick up more brass. If anyone is interested in getting rid of some brass I would be interested.

Thanks for any help!

I'm not familiar with the 284 Winchester but I think it is the parent cartridge to the 6.5x284 so you might be able to make brass from that. If I had to guess I would say factory brass would only be made on seasonal runs. You could try checking at the gun show in Phoenix this weekend. Hope that helps, I'm sure there are other people on here who know more about it than me.

if it is a bolt gun just buy 100rds of brass from midway and neck size rather than full length size. with neck sizing figure a minimum of 6 loads-maybe 20!- from each piece. thats 600 rounds. the lever and pump guns usually need to be fls for however.

Factory 284 cases are only manufactured seasonally and near impossible to get. The most common method is to buy 6.5x284 brass which is much more readily available by Norma and Lapua. Then neck it up. I've never played with a straight 284 but the guys I know that do have them have had great luck with H4831SC and H4350. I also know a couple that run the 180 VLDs over RL17 with blistering speed.

I will have to look into the 6.5x284 option. The 284 never really took off but it is a great shooting gun. The 6.5x284 seems to be a good choice for competitive shooters. I was going to buy a 7mm-08 but the 284 is almost an identical gun. Looks like I'm gonna have to keep my eye on the web for some brass. I think I read somewhere they have stopped manufacturing ammo for this caliber. The gun is a lever action but not the pre 64 model. Thanks for the info.

You might want to ask the guys over at noslerreloading.com. Plenty of reloading experience with the more rare calibers over on that forum.

Tdub- gun writers made a living discussing the 30-06- 280- 270 which is better. the 284 is a great round equivalent to any of those. midway graf and others should have some brass.

Biglakejake this was my fathers gun and the gun I've used to shoot all my deer so I want to keep it in the family. It has been some time since I have shot it and now that I have kids able to hunt I'm getting it back up and running. After looking more into expanding the next on the 6.5x285 it doesn't look to hard. I will use this as my last resort. As of now I should have enough to get me started. Thanks for all the info and help.

Right now I'm going to try H4350 with a Barnes TTSX 120 grain bullet and see how it plays out.

just from my very limited and narrow experience-might i suggest another load? like for all big game with that fine lever action winchester?

150gr nosler partition and 4831/3100. or ww760 with mag primers. all are lower pressure than 4350/414 and that matters in lever guns. all lever guns.

good luck,

lee

The 284 winchester was truely ahead of its time. It is an outstanding cartridge.

My dad has a model 100 in a .284. Similar gun its just the auto version. It LOVES 120gr bullets. Hates anything heavier. It'll hold 5 120grain ballistic tips in 1.5" at 100. It's killed an absolute pile of big ND whitetails. I even took it to Mississippi on a hunt one year and actually piled up 3 does that ran by me on a deer drive, I shot the whole herd and they landed literally on top of each other. I love that caliber!

In my search the two powders that stuck out to me were the H4350 and RL17. I'm able to get the H4350 where the other powders I haven't been able to find. I debated on which size bullet to go with so decided to go with a lighter bullet for speed and distance. I also decided to try this because of what they say the Barnes bullet does with keeping its mass. This gun will only be used for deer and small game. We have the same model in a 308 and a H&H 300 for larger game. I would love to hear your reasoning on your suggestions as I am just learning about this thing called reloading!
