Game and Fish Check Station 6A

Recommended Posts

Did any other CWT members get a chance to see the mule deer in the back of the G&F truck on Stoneman Lake road on Sunday? That was a trophy deer and it was a shame it was poached. That would have made a great trophy for someone. I would take a rough guess at 180+ and that is probably low balling. I wish I would have taken a pic. It seemed like the officers were pretty busy with citations and had their trucks full of antlers.

Didn't see that but was in Springerville on Friday at Rustys meat shop and a G&F officer brought in a young cow that had been shot that morning! I asked him how in the world people could mistake a cow for a bull, and he told me that I would be amazed at how often it happens. I just don't know how you could make that mistake....

Busy with citations? Trucks full of antlers?

Crazy. So there were people going thru the check station THINKING they had shot elk when they had instead shot deer? And there were multiple people who had made this mistake?

Please elaborate. I cant imagine this much stupidity all gathered in one spot.

I saw same thing never seen that many gandf agents ever. We thought something bad happend. I counted 7 trucks. They had set up a check point at stoneman and seems like they caught a few assholes.

When I was in High School I helped on a check point on Hwy 83. We had several "hunters" bring in the wrong animal, tagged and all legal. ;) We even had a father try and stop his son from confessing to shooting a Mule Deer with a Coues Tag and leaving it out there. OK the boy made a rookie mistake, after all his dad left him alone to hunt by himself. BAD FATHER!!!

The G&F officers and I talked about it and they decided to cite the father, not the son as long as they took us to the buck.

I think this year during one of the G&F meetings/hearings for fines, one came up that they person thought the shot a small elk and turned out to be a mule deer.

If you can't tell the difference between an elk and a deer, you don't belong in the field.

Still cant get past the phrase "trucks full of antlers". From the sounds of it more bucks were killed during the general elk hunt than the general deer hunt. And that was just one road in one unit.

I must clarify my post. I was up during the late rifle bull hunt. I am thinking the original post was discussing a deer hunt? Sorry about any confusion.

Amen to that. How in the world can you confuse an elk with a deer. I believe elk are 3 times the size of a buck deer. I just don't get it. It is really scary to think that there are people that stupid walking around the forests with guns

Most of the antlers showing from the trucks were elk with a couple of very large mule deer mixed in. I don't know the specifics on the citations and the exact number of animals but that was the largest checkpoint I had ever seen. The G&F were not playing around and it looked like they had some success catching poachers.
