My Wife has Joined the Coues Fraternity!

Recommended Posts

My wife Ronda took her first Coues buck on Friday, opening day, in unit 27. Amanda was also with us as she has the same hunt, and glassed it up. Actually she glassed up 5 bucks right under our glassing point!! I ranged them at 500 yards and knew we needed to get closer.

With Amanda watching from above, Ronda, our good friend Keven (who was here from Texas to see what all the hoopla was about this Coues hunting) and myself started dropping down from our vantage point atop some bluffs. We went down 2 steep, rock chutes through bluffs before we were able to reach the edge of yet another bluff which put us in range of the biggest of the bucks. It was a classic spot & stalk scenario.

We located the buck working a ridgeline toward a shady slope. Ronda kicked the bipod out on the 300 wsm and I ranged the buck at 256 yards, grabbed the camcorder and fired it up.

When Ronda located the buck in her scope and the deer stood still enough, she touched her off. The shot was high and a clean miss but the buck didn't seem the least bit concerned and started browsing again within seconds of the shot. I told Ronda to take her time and hold steady. Just as I zoomed in the camera the 300 wsm fired and I watched in shock as the buck literally exploded in my viewfinder!!! He dropped in his tracks and that was that.

Here is a photo showing where we glassed and shot from in the background.

We had it pretty rough coming out. We had 3 blufflines to scale and very warm weather to deal with.

We arrived home after dark totally exhausted. Well, maybe not totally exhausted, we did fry up some backstrap for dinner. :)

Good job Adams. I can appreciate that rough unit 27 country. That is the unit that I grew up trompin around in. I think it was more exciting watching my wife shoot a big buck than if I had done it myself. That is neat you got it on video. How did she manage to only get blood on her fingernails? JK :)

Congratualtions to Rhonda. Great story and pictures!

That is an awesome way to break into the Coues success family.

It's amazing that she does not have a hair out of place and has the sharp polished nails showing in the picture too! She could Sell that photo to Revlon to use for advertisong to the womens hunting group!

Y'know, if she told us that the nail polish was her good luck charm, I bet a few of us might be doing our nails before reaching our glassing spots.

The accessory for every fashion consious hunter.
