catclaw Report post Posted November 12, 2006 Yesterday was the first chance I have had to scout in 10 post-rut. We bumped one huge bull last night and glassed 14 more this morning, four of which were over 380 and one monster that was easy 400". I hope he isn't broken- it was hard to tell at the distance. I hear all the broken horn stories from unit 10, but none of the bulls we saw were obviously busted. If I can just get this digi-scoping thing down and get some photos of these monsters. Thanksgiving, hurry up!
WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted November 12, 2006 Nice job those kind of bulls were hard to come by this year, I would like to see pics of those bulls. Not many bulls can be judged an easy 400 inches and still be to far away to know if he was broken. I hope he is as big as you think he is.
Flash Report post Posted November 12, 2006 Sounds like you found the mother load. Been scouting a few times now with no bulls found yet. We must not be near each other I hope to find just 1 average bull for the hunt.
Lance Report post Posted November 12, 2006 That is a great bunch of bulls you saw! Here is one that is a long ways off but is not busted. What do you think this one scores?
catclaw Report post Posted November 12, 2006 I can't see his spread, I can't tell how good his bottom two points are. I guess he is in the 360 range I couldn't tell if there were any small portions broken off of mine, but the main beams were intact and I could count all the points. The royals and two of the bulls i saw were 24"+ and the 5th were 16+ on one, the other biggest one was 7 points on one side and I never could see the right side. I hope the right side was as good as the left. I have seen a LOT of bulls and very few of them are the "Oh my Gosh" bulls. I hope I can find them on Friday morning! elkhunter Report post Posted November 12, 2006 The rut this year was pretty low key so most bulls should be 100% intact
COUESAZ Report post Posted November 12, 2006 We only saw a few unit 27 bulls that were busted up this year as well.
catclaw Report post Posted November 12, 2006 That's what I like hearing. I hope those horns are 100% intact!

Lance Report post Posted November 13, 2006 Unit 9 and 10 are very busted up from what I have seen and heard. Here is another picture of that bull.
Flash Report post Posted November 14, 2006 During the rut, most of the bulls in 10 I saw were broken. Not seeing a bull anywhere in 10 now. Hoping to find a 300" class bull for the rifle hunt. Not looking good yet.
COOSEFAN Report post Posted November 16, 2006 There are alot of broken bulls in the western units especially 9 and 10. I think I have seen more broken bulls than UN-broken bulls and have hunted/scouted both units alot this year. It is also very hard to find a bull that scores higher than 370" in either unit because of weak tops, they are there, but VERY hard to find and that was even when they were in the rut! The bulls were still breaking antlers as of 2 weeks ago with the post-rut activity! It will be a tough hunt for anyone holding out for a high scoring bull in 9 and 10. My hope is that the hunter pressure isn't as bad this year because the bulls are still spread out with more available water sources. I had the good fortune to hunt with a guy who a couple of you know in unit 10 and we anticipated the probability of shooting a broken bull and we just hoped it wasn't TOO broken! We were fortunate enough to find this bull and he is missing his G4 on his left antler and nobody was complaining! Best of luck to the late elk hunters, JIM>
Tracker Report post Posted November 18, 2006 Great Bull Coosefan, I apply every year for unit 10 thinking that is the place to be for a highscoring bull. Maby I better change my plans?
COOSEFAN Report post Posted November 18, 2006 Great Bull Coosefan, I apply every year for unit 10 thinking that is the place to be for a highscoring bull. Maby I better change my plans? Thanks Tracker, There's big bulls in every unit, but I feel this year, the Eastern units did better in growing bigger tops on bulls. This isn't the case year after year though, but seemed to be the case this year. Unit 10 is a great late hunt because of glassability as opposed to unit 9 but I think because of the high bull to cow ratio in 10, there is alot of competition for cows and the antler breaking fights are more common. This is just what I believe but it may be something in the water, I just know broken bulls are common every year in 10. I actually hate the late hunts in 9 and 10, too much competition, usually turns into a waterhole hunt, and because of the units history, expectations are usually way to high for a late season hunt. The biggun's are still there, just a needle in a haystack and not enough of an elevation change in these units to help pinpoint where they'll be JIM>
Tracker Report post Posted November 18, 2006 Thanks Coosefan, With the change in application deadlines this year I better get my mind made up. I have hunted Coues deer in unit 23 & Javelina in 27. Both look like good elk country.
