Which One?

Recommended Posts

Hi all... I am new to this nice forum, and new to hunting Coues deer. I have been hunting whitetail, bears, elk, and sheep for about 12 years now, but have never hunted Coues deer. A friend from Arizona has invited me to join him this January for a Coues deer hunt in Mexico. I would like some advice on which of my rifles to take. I have a Kimber .300 WSM which I feel comfortable with out to about 200 yards, I have a Howa Varminter .22-250 which I have used out to 350. Finally, I have a Browning 7mm Rem Mag with Boss and 26" Barrel, which I am comfortable to about 250-300 yds.(It weighs 10 1/2 pounds with scope) Which rifle should I take? My friend says that shots out to 400-500 yards are possible and common! (He shoots a .257 Weatherby) I am afraid the .22-250 may be too light, the .300 would not give me enough shooting distance, and the 7 Mag is too big & heavy?!? Any advice would be appreciated, as I dont know my A** from my elbow when it comes to Coues deer!

Thanks.

Hey cocomen69, welcome :)

That 300wsm should reach out and touch em. Why are you only comfortable out to 200yds? That would be my pick if you did not want to carry the 7mm. Go to the range and start stretching it out with the 300wsm it's very capable.

Agree, find out where the 300 is hitting out at longer ranges. Use a balistic program if need be.

The 300 wsm is what I shoot for coues. But take wichever one you are most confident with. They are all great calibers for coues.

Thanks for the advice guys... It looks like I should stick to the .300 and hit the range. The big problem is that in South Florida, where I live, the longest rifle range we have is 100 yards. The nearest 300 Yd range is 250 miles away.
