WFGinNM Report post Posted November 10, 2006 Had a good time during the first hunt, saw coues everyday except for Sunday. 11 total, 9 doe and 2 bucks 1 fork without browntines, and 1 that walked through the bottom of a thick canyon before we could count his points or find him again. We stayed in that spot all day waiting and searching for him to show himself but no such luck. We also saw 4 bears and a bunch of mulie doe. The hunt started off a on a bad note Friday afternoon when I tried to look through my Nikon 10X42 ATB's and the view was all messed up, must have knocked them on something. One of my friends loaned me his 10X42 Leupolds but they left much to be desired as far as clearness. We had a main camp and moved about on the 4 wheelers to save on fuel and wear and tear on the truck, then hike in to glassing spots. On Tuesday upon returning to the bikes a bear had found them and ate the seats, we must have chased him off because he didn't have a chance to finish them. I'll try to post some pictures when I have a bit more time. --Bill
Guest AZ>NMcouesaddict Report post Posted November 11, 2006 Sounds like both a good and bad trip. Bummer about those binos. I talked to the game warden and he said that he talked to some coues hunters that were having a tough time turning up bucks. I thinks I've glassed up bears just about everytime I've been out scouting in 23, seems to be alot this year. Too bad them bears didn't stick around too long, you could've been riding around with a bear skin seat on your atv. I'll be out tomorrow in 23 to give it a whirl. I relocated a big buck that I located several weeks ago while scouting. He was only about 300 yards away from where he was the last time. Watched him for a couple hours till he bedded then snuck out. Hopefully he'll stick around for tomorrow. THanks for the update.
4Falls Report post Posted November 11, 2006 Ok. Just came back from NM unit 23 late Wednesday nite. My buddy and I had the Nov. 4 mulie hunt. The only legal buck we saw were opening morning and were Coues deer. We hunted very hard and saw over 100 deer during the hunt. I wish we would have had bear tags instead, as we saw seven of them. One evening there were 5 bears on one hillside. One of them was the biggest bears Ive ever seen. The next day we glassed two different bears one another big one although he was a cinnamon phase. Bear sign everywhere we went, piles of it if you know what I mean. We did see one camp that had killed two good mulies, probably the only two mature deer left in that part of the unit. I just love the country over there though. Maybe if we'd have had another day or two... who knows. Congratulations to all those who were successfull.
Guest AZ>NMcouesaddict Report post Posted November 17, 2006 WFGinNM, just got back from the second 23 coues hunt and boy did I get my butt kicked. I was fortunate to locate one big buck and several nice bucks. Did harvest a coues on the last day. I'll post pics soon. Thanks for the info. effenjeff, my brother and I glassed up two beautiful muleys south of Mule Creek. We figure a tall 24" 4x4 and a 26" 3x4. They were feeding and didn't have a care in the world. We were praying that someone would drive by as we were glassing off the main road. Unfortunately no one with a muley tag could be found. Oh well, they'll be bigger next year. WFGinNM Report post Posted November 17, 2006 AZ>NM, Good to hear you got into some. I'll be back at it in '08 I hope, Unless I can find some way to get a tag next year that doesn't conflict with my Kodiak blacktail hunt in November. I'm still looking at my pictures and maps trying to figure what I should have or could have done. But no complaints from me, It's a blast just seeing these little deer. Can't wait to see your pics. --Bill
