trphyhntr Report post Posted November 18, 2013 when its a 4x4? or i see people say its a 2pt, when its a 3x3. correct me if im wrong, its just something i noticed on several of the deer post i read. i mean i know out west we say things different, like 4x4 instead of 8pt and all that. but you get credit for the brow tine on your score with a coues so why wouldnt you count it when describing the buck? it makes no sense to me

trphyhntr Report post Posted November 18, 2013 cause we dont count the eye guards but they count in the score, so why not?
joeeden Report post Posted November 18, 2013 It doesn't hold up to the common sense test. I have a good friend from Arkansas and it drives him crazy. It's just how we do it out here.
DesertBull Report post Posted November 18, 2013 Anything greater than 5 and we have to use our toes to count. Takes to long to take off the boots and socks.
kwp Report post Posted November 18, 2013 Because if it isn't old enough to have eye guards then it isn't worth counting how many points it has. Same thing is done for muleys. Mature buck is a 4 pt. 4 on each side plus eye guards. Clear as mud if you ask me! Real reason is that when easterners started hunting out west they found the coues so challenging that they forgot how to count.
coatimundi01 Report post Posted November 18, 2013 I guess it's just the way I learned growing up. I always thought it was an east coast/west coast thing. _x_ no browtines, _pt count browtines. I dunno...
ForkHorn Report post Posted November 18, 2013 Most bucks have brow tines so being the intelligent coues hunters we are, we decided it doesn't make any sense to mention the constant? Haha I guess it's the same reason we mispronounce "coues"... We just do.
trphyhntr Report post Posted November 18, 2013 ya my old man is from south dakota, i drove him crazy trying tell him my buck was a 3x2 not a 4x3.
ThomC Report post Posted November 18, 2013 It is nuts. My brother kills an 8 pointer and I kill a 3 pointer and everybody thinks that his deer is much better. May be it is because we dont go on daylight savings time and the whole country does. Too much daylight has fried our thinking. So all you easterners and Californos go back where you came from, we are all crazy here.
SunDevil Report post Posted November 18, 2013 ya my old man is from south dakota, i drove him crazy trying tell him my buck was a 3x2 not a 4x3. wouldn't it have been a 7 point then instead of a 3X2? a typical coues with an eye guard and 3 points per side would be the following: western count = 3x3 eastern count = 8 point
AZ8 Report post Posted November 18, 2013 Ever since easterners moved out west, this topic has been discussed ad nauseam. You guys already gave us liberalism....at least let us keep our method of counting antlers! Long before coues hunting was chic, mule deer hunting was king out west. More often than not, mule deer don't have eye guards. There is a big difference between a 2 point mule deer with eyeguards and a 3 point without any. Ford vs Chevy MAC vs PC Coke vs Pepsi Ginger vs Mary Ann ......carry on! :)
Elkhunter1 Report post Posted November 18, 2013 Dodge Pc Pepsi Mary Ann now that that's all cleared up, simply put we did it to p*** them off so they wouldn't come out here and kill our deer.

Ernesto C Report post Posted November 18, 2013 I don't discriminate.. I'll take a 3x3, 3 pointer or whatever you call it. I'll take a blond or a brunet.. I shot first ask questions later Casey in the other hand... he finds a 4 pointer... but after all the shots fired he ends up with a 2 pointer or 2x2 Ernesto C
