The One That Got Away

Recommended Posts

I have had dozens of occaisions fly fishing the lower Niagara river back home in NY for Salmon and Steelhead where I set the hook and had big fish spool me with my 10 weight (broomstick Tarpon flyrod) with a 20lb flouro leader. One time I set the hook and saw a headshake above water and just about puked at the size of that King, must've been close to a thirty pounder. He bulldogged down into an eddy 20 yards off the bank and I just couldn't get the leverage and angle to pull him out of there due to the steep banks. Had to snap him off... you haven't lived until you've had a fish that you could still feel the tail swimming but couldn't turn them to save your life!

Back when I lived in Texas my wife and I went to Port Aransas in October for a mini-vacation. We went out on a big charter boat called the "Wharf Cat" and the bull reds were in the channel off the jetty. When the boat anchored all 50 folks on board dropped their baited hooks in the water. Seems like the fish were right underneath us because my wife hooked up right away- and all I saw was her almost get pulled off the rail. I grabbed her and the rod was doubled over! She fought it and fought it but never landed it. It tangled in several other lines and the deck hands decided to cut the lines. While she was fighting that fish- I caught a small panfish sized thing that the deckhands quickly snatched up from me and cut in half. The deckhand put a bigger hook on my line, attached the fish head section, and told me to hang on for dear life! I dropped the bait down to the bottom and before I could click over on the spool the thing started running under the boat. I locked down and all 240lbs of me almost went over the rail. Never got it- it snapped off, but I was told it was probably a 40-50lb bull redfish or a HUGE Black Drum.

This one got away once by stealing a fish I'd caught, but it didn't happen again. Here's my 10.5 lb large mouth bass. I apologize for the dust on it. Dang my house cleaner must've been gone hunting :)

2010........I was fishing the section of the Madison River , a half mile below Hebgen Dam. I was nymph fishing a narrow run between some subsurface rocks, and set the hook on a big fish. It took off so hard and so fast, it snapped my tippet. Don't know what it was, or how big, but 30" Browns have been caught in there.

I went fishing recently with my brother to a local pond full of bass and catfish. We had bought a bunch of hot dogs, and were hoping to catch a bunch of catfish. So I'm sitting on the bank, nearby my brother, waiting for something to take my bait, and my brother stands up and starts making a bunch of noise. I grab the net and head towards him. His line jerks, and he was about to fall into the water. The fish thrashes on the bank, and I run to edge. It reveals itself and, it's a carp! The thing thrashes as I try to get it in the net. I make another effort to get it in the net, and it thrashes and snaps the line. I almost jumped into the water to get it, but just like that it was gone. I felt so bad that I let my brother down. The thing was one of the biggest carp I've ever seen. It looked like a 3 and half foot long fish. Huge! I cant even guess how much it weighed.
