Coolers

Recommended Posts

No, I don't want to have 20 people on here selling me a Yeti or Canyon Cooler. They're out of my price range. I have an elk hunt coming up and it will probably be the last one for awhile since I am moving out of state for my job after this season... I just want to grab maybe a $50 100qt Coleman or two if necessary.

How many quarts do I need for boned out elk meat?

I was thinking I could get away with one big 100qt cooler (which I need to buy or borrow) and the smaller 40qt and 62qt coolers that I already own... Am I way short on volume?

There are a ton on Craigslist if you search. I just searched "Coleman Cooler" and found quite a few from $5-$50.

Scooter not sure where you live but I have one of the big white extreme coleman coolers I would give you. I just lost the hinges front and back on the last trip. They are just the right height to snap off on on my trailer. You could replace them or simply strap or tape the lid down once you fill it. I am going to upgrade this cooler so I need to get rid of it.

I liked the idea Tony posted in the other thread about a cooler for a big animal. Plywood, insulation foam, and some screws or nails. You could build it ahead of time or just make it ready to nail together at camp if needed. Wrap the meat in plastic bags and line the wood/styrofoam box with a tarp. He said they froze a buffalo and used dry ice and it lasted soemthing like 5 days still frozen.

If I ever get drawn for elk I will throw one of these together that exactly takes up about a third of the truck bed or a section of the trailer. I use coolers but mostly for ice and food and bringing home deer and smaller animals.

Thanks for the very generous offer rcdinaz, I won't be driving up that way until the hunt, you mind hanging onto it until Nov 14th? I always make a stop in Chandler to grab 1lb of Rudy's smoked turkey...
