Coues assassin Report post Posted October 28, 2013 I am new to the website but not new to coues hunting. I have been blessed to have gotten a deer the last 4 years using a different gun every time. I keep switching guns and I feel it is time for me now to pick one (for deer) to use consistently and build 100% confidence in that gun. What would be the suggestion (I know we all got our own opinions just curious what most guys seem to go with) a 7mm or .300mag I typically shoot 300-500 yards never over 500, but lately my last 2 deer have been 50-100 yards (fluke?) any suggestions on which gun and what bullet you guys shoot would be much appreciated. My typical method of madness is glassing and getting in range
ready2hunt Report post Posted October 28, 2013 Welcome coues assassin! You'll love this site, there are a lot of great people and even more information. I am not smart enough to comment on which guns is better than another. Regardless of the type I think everyone will agree with the ol' saying- the only man to fear is the one who knows his gun better than his wife. I love my 30-06 and its the only one rifle I shoot. Good luck choosing one!
willhunt4coues Report post Posted October 28, 2013 Get something you can practice with all day without having to spend thousands on. I have now 2 .308 and they are my go to rifle for Coues. I can shoot them all day long (practicing) and it is easier to find what you need for reloading/ammo. I shot my buck last year at 550 and I know for a fact I could take one at 800. I have had 30-06, 7mm, and will pick a .308 over any of them any day. My next build (next year) will be a 6.5x284 for Coues. Good luck on your quest!!! sjvcon Report post Posted October 28, 2013 Not sure I understand the question ... are you asking for a caliber, or asking which between a .300 Mag and a 7mm Mag? If I were building a deer specific, I'd go 280AI or even 6.5-06AI ... purely from powder volume/velocity/ballistic stance (and probably the later of the two unless I wanted factory ammo). If I wanted something for deer, elk or whatever, I'd probably opt for the .300Mag, though a 7mm will surely do the trick and probably just as well (I have one of each ... I'm spoiled). Or you could stick with the aforementioned .280AI or get into the short mags ... there are a lot of choices. All that said, I am no expert ... I just have a lot of toys. There are a lot of guys on here who have more experience than me with calibers, and probably have some good input ...
PRDATR Report post Posted October 29, 2013 I would go 7Mag just it has a slight ballistic advantage over the 30 cal.
