No patience.

Recommended Posts

Anyone hunt or scout with friends or family that like to go with but can't stand the wait? I'm lucky enough to have hunting in my blood and can glass for hours and enjoy the hunt for more than just the kill. My brother on the other hand can't last at all. He has a hunt in a couple weeks and I hope he kills. Most off I hope he takes the experience of the hunt and learns much more than taking home a trophy. How can I teach him and others that's it's more than the kill and more the love of the hunt and being with friends and family?

Sounds like your bro is just like every other novice hunter or even fisherman. No one who is new or inexperienced to hunting likes to sit for hours or go home fruitless (for lack of a better phrase). Patience and appreciation for the experience come with time.

I have hunting in my blood as well but I can tell you that I hated waiting for hours to see an animal growing up or going home without seeing anything. The only thing that made me love the experience was the joy my father showed of just having me out there and him finding ways to make me like the experience. Now I am forever hooked. Just put on a smile and enjoy your time out there. There are plenty of people who grow up hunting and don't care for it.....I would venture to say that in 90% of those cases it's because whoever took them had a less enjoyable attitude. Clearly you're not one of those.

I am sure you two will do great. Post up some pics when you do go out!

I believe it is unteachable in my opinion.

I've got some hunting buddies that are the same way. After about 30 minutes of fruitless glassing they're off their glass texting, facebooking, napping, whatever. It drives me nuts but it's better than hunting alone (usually). It's so much better when the area we're hunting doesn't have cell service! ha.

I've yet to do it, but I always thought it'd be a good idea to take a newbie out early in the year (may/June) & sit them on a salt lick some where. At that time of year, the does & little bucks are hitting so hard it's pretty much nonstop action. A good way to get some reliable & close action to capture their interest.

Note to self: Sounds like a good activity to take my girls on this spring...

Maybe taking them to places where they can see more game is helpful. Then they start to enjoy the glassing more and develop some ability to wait longer before seeing something. My husband is the same way....he gets bored glassing if we don't see a lot of deer.....I could glass forever though. Glassing just isn't his forte.

I personally think it takes....."that bad hunt" to find out if they like it or not.

I have taken people out, scouted for them, got them their animal in the first hour.

They dont have the same appreciation as the person who scouted with me and had to wait till mid season or last day to fill the tag out on a legal animal.
