elkhunter Report post Posted October 21, 2013 They did lower the tags for this plowing season in 34b. I am highly interested in the fact that a mere mile away there seems to be no issues with mule deer decline, I don't think this kind of information has been brought up to game and fish, I do know that the wardens in those units provide their opinion but overall the commission board makes the final decision in tag numbers etc.
az_shooter Report post Posted October 21, 2013 The game wardens are the one who suggest to the head honchos about how many tags should be issued per unit each year but the board gets the overall say.
JOEDKILLA Report post Posted October 22, 2013 i want to start a patition to lower the amount of riffle tags and have archry deer be more strict They did lower the tags for this plowing season in 34b. I am highly interested in the fact that a mere mile away there seems to be no issues with mule deer decline, I don't think this kind of information has been brought up to game and fish, I do know that the wardens in those units provide their opinion but overall the commission board makes the final decision in tag numbers etc. I agree with having less rifle tags and would even go as far as willingly pay more for one if the quality were there. However we can't expect rifle hunters to be the only ones making a sacrifice. Unregulated, non species specific (any antler) archery tags are a big problem for muledeer bucks. In 35s the problem is somewhat obscured. The only way to shoot a mulie in these units is to pick up a muzzleloader or fling arrows; and fling'um they do!(wondering how many archers fess up to wounding animals). Last season there were 50 Nov. and 50 Dec. muzzleloader tags for these units, again these were non species specific. 41 total deer were taken during these hunts and I'm guessing a good chunk were mulies. Most of these bucks were taken in Dec. This year they've shuffled these tags around to 80 in Nov. and 20 in Dec. , 100 non the less(not wanting to lose the revenue i'm guessing) but the pressure is still there. This means less bucks will make it to the rut. Every season the hunting comunity seems to grow and the woods seem to shrink and it's for that reason that we as spotsmen must be willing to compromise and sacrifice for the good of the game we persue. I've had the privlage of meeting the wardens in these units, they're good people assigned a difficult task. My concerns are more with the higher ups and the biologists keeping count. justanotherpunk Report post Posted October 22, 2013 To answer your question about archers wounding animals. Far to many hunters, weapon not withstanding, wound far more animals than they ever should. That being said, anyone that thinks it will never happen to them isn't realistic. That doesn't mean it's excusable either. One trip to a range, rifle or archery, to observe what people believe is acceptable regarding accuracy under the best of circumstances will disgust anyone who understands the meaning of taking an animal cleanly. For that matter, just read the numerous archery elk posts regarding wounded animals! As a side note, all the help I've read about people giving to others after a mistake has been made is admirable and should be commended. Our hunting community is eroding and is becoming dominated by selfish attitudes, selfish/rude behaviors, and general lack of respect for the animals we take and the others in our fraternity. Of course it's easy to point fingers and place blame. I for one am very tired of all the justifications that are made in the name of doing whatever a person wants as long as it's legal. When this attitude dominates hunters it's not hard to extrapolate it to include those who are meant to manage. I'm not meaning to denigrate the boots on the ground in the G&F but more to include the departments role in the decline of our hunting heritage. To make it clear I hate rules more than most!!! The last thing I want is more of them but somethings gotta change. I guess at this point I've hijacked this thread, I won't continue my rant any further, at least not in this thread. elkhunter Report post Posted October 22, 2013 I agree, no more rule changes for us sportsman, we all have to remember that when the wildlife population declined it was us sportsman that said hey lets do something to bring the population back. Ontop of that we are currently in a 30 year drought where overall rainfall has been below average, that would certainly affect any population and those of you who know these southern units understand that water is not all that available compared to other units in the state. Even now springs that are on topo maps haven't produced a drop of water in the last 10 years, I remember and have pics of swimming in pond size puddles from springs in 34b, heck I was conceived at one of those springs in 1985!
