Rifle scope question!

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

So I have been an archery hunter through my you get years and have never really rifle hunted until these last couple years. And this question me seem dumb or simple but I need advice from people who know a thing or two haha. On my rifle now I just have a cheap 4-16 x 44 and I was curious if I should buy something with a tad bigger objective lens and a little more zoom. I will be shooting out to 600 and mainly only hunting coues.

Thanx so much for the help!

Joel

It depends a lot on the brand of scope. Some are way more clear than others. I don't think the size of your scope is to bad, but if I were planning on shooting 600 yards I would get a quality scope, more because of the clarity. I myself like vortex...

The power, as well as objective lense size are fine, I wouldn't worry about changing those specs, but I would look at (if its a cheap scope) upgrading quality.

It's just like anything else, you get what you pay for. My first rifle had a Redfield 3x9 w/40mm objective. Thought it was just fine until I looked through my hunting buddy's Z5.

I really kind of thought he was wasting his money until I had a few hunts under my belt and couldn't see squat at low light conditions. Glassed up one of the nicest bucks that I have ever seen at 500+ yards , but had trouble finding him in the Redfield. I could see him walk over the skyline after I tried to line up for five minutes. I was sick,,,,, that huge reticle at 9 power wasn't working out. That's when I saw the light.

Purchased a Leupold VXIII 6.5 x 20 w/40mm Fine Duplex, it has the elevation turret only. Huge difference, no problems at 500 + anymore. Get what you can afford and won't get you divorced.

Having great glass really changes your game. I never had an issue with light with my 40mm Leupold, shot several deer deer at first light. I have 50 mm Liecas and 60mm Doctors. There may be a slight difference seeing a bit earlier with the Doctors but not much. Not a fan on how the 50mm look on a rifle.

A fine reticle is a plus, don't go too fine because it's hard to see at low light.

I routinely shoot out to 700 yards with a 9x on the top end.

You are fine. Fret the adjustments and low-light optics before objective size and power...

One you start trying lethal shots beyond 300yds, you really need to spend some serious $$$ on a top-name scope. There's just no getting around it. When you say "cheap scope" is that like a Tasco or Simmons cheap? Or Wal Mart Chinese NC STAR junk cheap?

I used to shoot a walmart special bushnell 3x9 on a marlin 270, killed my first buck with that rifle and a couple coyotes. Shot that scope for 5 years before I just flat got tired of not being able to see anything clearly past 200 yards. I upgraded to a leupold VXII 4x12 40mm and it made a huge difference (obviously of course). Great clear scope and makes life a lot easier when shooting in low light and longer distances. I had that scope on my rifle for a little more than a year before I really started getting interested in long range shooting and reloading and rifle building. So I upgraded once again to a leupold mark 4 6.5x20 50mm scope, won't buy another scope again, unless I start a new rifle project. Anyways what I'm saying is find what you want to be able to accomplish with your rifle and find a good optic that will support what your wanting to do and get it. People on here will tell you all day to buy leupold or buy vortex or zeiss but that fact of the matter is they are all great optics. So just find one that works for you and go with it.

I also upgraded the rifle too, no longer shooting a 270 but that's a different topic, good luck on your scope and be sure to shop around, there are a lot of good ones out there.

What brand scope do you have and what rifle and caliber are you shooting? Shooting paper from a bench at 600 yards with all the time in the world is a whole different game then popping a buck at the same distance off a tree limb or rock.

I shot a budget 16X Weaver T16 in Silhouette Competition out to 500 Meters and never felt handicapped by lack of magnification.

Wow that's a lot of knowledge and I appreciate everything all of you have written! I really feel like I already have a better understanding of what I need to do now. I actually don't even know the brand but it was like a $80 scope. And I'm shooting it on my 30-06. But yeah I was actually looking at the vortex scopes because I love my binoculars and spotting scope through Vortex! Thanx again guys!
