Sam Report post Posted October 16, 2013 My daughter was fortunate to get her fist elk on the youth hunt. After missing opening day and getting to camp a little late, we headed out from camp Saturday morning just before daylate to go after a bugling bull. It took about 45 minutes until we saw the 1st cow. My daughter could not get a shot. We stayed with the herd and she was soon able to get a shot at a cow that was standing broadside for a few seconds, but started running before she shot. A clean miss as I watching with my binoculars. The bulls kept bugling, so we kept after the herd. After another 10 minutes or so, I decided to try a calf call. We sat down and called for about 10 minutes. Some coyotes started going crazy and the bulls kept at it too. So, I called a little more agressively and soon a cow came over the hill looking in our direction. One shot to the neck and she went down. Of course, the whole morning was memorable for my daughter. My wife was with us too. What a great hunt and the pack out wasn't bad.

Sam Report post Posted October 31, 2013 Congratulations Sam! That was an awesome event for your daughter and you were able to share that with her. How far was the shot and what weapon was she shooting? Thanks Keith - She shoots a .270. The shot was just about 100 yards. She was sad about missing an earlier shot, but recovered quickly after this one went down on the spot. It sure was exciting for my wife and daughter to see this cow respond to a call and come in.......not quite like a bear or a bull, but still pretty cool for them.
