What knife to get?

Recommended Posts

Sounds like havalon is the way to go (I'll buy from CW). Any preference as to the specific type (edge, zytel). How often do you change the blade, and is it easy to do while in the field?

I disagree with the havalon, they don't get nearly enough penetration. Coues are a very weary animal, so you need something that will penetrate deep on the first stab. I use a buck knife 118. Forget the bone saw, coues will never sit around long enough for a saw to be effective. I've only taken one coues with a saw...not an easy task!!

LMAO

This is no laughing matter elkhunter1. I get so sick and tired of reading posts on here of wounded coues that are not retrieved because the hunter made a poor sawing motion. With today's knife technology, is it really ethical to be using bone saws these days?

The bone saw technology has also evolved. You can get a 20 volt Lith-ion cordless saw. I believe it also is very quite so you can have it on as you jump out of you tree stand on top!
Lol...in all seriousness Andrewj, go with the havalon. Super light weight, you don't have to worry about sharpening it, and extremely sharp. Joking aside, i never thought I'd say this, but I doubt I'll ever use the Chinese Star on another coues....I'm a havalon fan for life!

They're pretty easy to change in the field. Be a bit careful when u have blood on your hands though, you definitely don't wanna slip with a havalon. You can get through a coues with a single blade pretty easy.

You're using the wrong kind of saw...gotta use one of the survival saw cables. They work great, just have to get it around the neck just right. :D

Seriously though, love my Havalon...made short work of a coues last year on one blade.

Practice changing the blade before you get in the field, but yeah pretty easy. I use a Leatherman for changing the blades and works fine for me.

Well, I use the hunting saw that my dad handed down to me.

I love the havalon knives! Havalon came out with a new one this past year called the Baracuta Blaze, it's a longer thicker blade for hunters. The one most people have used and are recommending is the Havalon Piranta, which has a smaller blade. It's still a good idea to carry a traditional, heavy bladed knife along with the havalon since the havalon knives can break if you use them to twist something apart.

After using my Razor Blaze on an elk and an antelope this year my Havalon has officially been replaced. Btw I was a die hard Havalon guy for over 5 years.

I will always carry the Havalon & Razor Blaze knife's in my pack. Like most of you I love the Havalon knife, but I hate how fragile the blade can be when you twist it. The Razor knife has finally solved that problem. I recently purchased the Razor Blaze and have been trying it out. I love it! It fits really well into my hand, it's not heavy & you don't have to sharpen it. I have tried it on a lot of Dove, Squirrel's & steaks. So far it seems like a great knife, but the true test will be ketting it into an Elk.

The Havalon knifes are great, but be careful with them. When the blades brake, they tend to go flying; had one bounce off my face earlier this year.

This is a good point. And when/if they do break, find the blade and pick it up. You wouldn't believe it, but I heard a story of a WY guide that took my buddy out and when they were done taking care of the animal, the guide purposely broke the blade off a havalon and left it in the gut pile and remarked "let the wolves chew on this for a while!" While I'm not a big fan of wolves, that's pretty messed up!

After reading this thread, I've ordered a Havalon from the CWT store, and ordered a Razor Blaze as well. I should be set!

Now that's great service! Thanks Amanda.

I'm adding these to my pack to go alongside my Buck Omni Hunter, which I love.

I use my Buck 105 pathfinder for just about everything. I have lots of knives, and I'm probably going to get a havalon just because it's the latest whiz-bang contraption.
