Any HAM (mainly 'h') hunters?

Recommended Posts

I have always used my bow except last year and I used my muzzleloader. Was a fun way to get it done.

I shot a hogalina with a HK 45 Tac. It was a good time. I intended to use the Sig last year, but time and wind didn't help me out.

I used the 230 gr. Remington hollow points without any issue. I think she was at 25 yards or so.

Last year I had the 230 gr Gold Dots.

I drew a rifle tag this year because the HAM hunts conflicted with my schedule, but I fully intend to try and take my Javalina with my .38 Super 1911. I will probably have my rifle too, but I want to use the .38 Super if I can.

I Think I Settled On My Load Today After Doing Done Wet Phone Book Testing.

Hornady 158 Xtp From My 4" 686 357 Mag.

I shoot the 147 grn XTP in my 9. There is a better test you can do. It takes some building but it works better. Build a small troff out of wood about 3 ft long and wide and tall enough to put 1 gallon ziploc bags full of water in (open-ended) so you can shoot lengthwise. When you test the rounds place the full bags standing in the troff so they line up at least 32 inches deep. From about 10 inches away from the first bag shoot into the troff so the round will travel from one end of the troff to the other. Measure from the front edge (first bag) to where the bullet is in the troff. Take that measurement and multiply it by .56 this will give the penetration equal to ballistic gelatin. Then I take the round and measure its diameter and weight. Figure what the weight retention and the expansion is. My rounds penetrate 11.5" with a weight retention of 96% and expand 2.3 times normal size. This test was similar to what the FBI used back in the mid 90's as ballistic gelatin was hard to come by.

javelina aren't big animals, doesn't take a big bullet to kill them, I've used 110 grs in my .357mag and 180's in my .44mag. thought about packing my Single Six with the .22mag cylinder just for the lighter weight pistol

Why 10" and not the distance you expect the shot to be?

Yeah shooting from 10" is a little ridiculous.

This test was developed by the FBI as a control test to gauge penetration, weight retention, and expansion. It gives you the base numbers for what a bullet will do.

I'd take both handguns with you and alternate each day! I've taken my bow out some times, but all my kills were with handguns. Ruger .44 mag, Desert Eagle .44 mag, Rock River .223 pistol and last spring took I one with my "new" LAR Grizzly .45 Win mag, which is a big 1911 style pistol. Got drawn again for 37B and will try the bow first again, with the .45 mag on my hip.

Whichever one you carry...good luck!

CouestrackeR, That Grizzly Is Awesome!

Going To Be Hard To Leave The 1911'S InThe Safe, But I Think The 686 Is The Better Choice.
