Archery Proficiency Test????

Recommended Posts

BAAAAAAAD IDEA!!!! Most animals are are wounded because of taking bad shots, i.e. running, bad position, etc. Skill has little to do with that... Anyone who would suggest game and fish take on something else, hasn't hunted around here very long... They can't handle whats on their plate now... If you start excluding folks from hunting because they can't shoot what YOU think they should be able to shoot, whats next??? What if they say you have to be able to hit pie plate at 100 yards or 200 yards 9 out of 10 times? What if a rifle hunter has to hit a quarter at 600 yards 9 out of ten times or they can't hunt? PETA would love that rule...

How about if they just take a hunter ed. course and maybe learn good hunting ethics. Know your limits as a hunter, don't take bad shots. Just because someone can hit a deer @ 400 yards doesn't mean I can, know your limits.I could keep going but I'll stop. B)

All great ideas... All things everyone should do... Make them laws? How would you enforce them? While hunters ed courses have value, I don't think they should be mandatory... I really didn't learn any more than I had been taught by my family over the years... I enjoyed the class and was glad to take it but I don't think it should be mandatory...

Just another way to make more money. Isn't that what is about?

Just what we all need!!! More laws + more government programs = BIGGER GOVERNMENT = HIGHER TAXES!!!! Lets do it!

Seriously, sometimes less is better!

When you lose lose that feeling, might as well quit hunting. To me the rush I can get from hunting is simply awesome!!! B)

I tried this about 7 years ago and game and fish told me that they would not do it. There answer was, they would lose revenue and they could suport loosing revenue.

Good luck if you try it now. Have all of your ducks in a row if you try it.

Good Luck

I'd rather see an ATV proficiency or IQ test.

How about banning atv use during hunting season!!!! Nothing worse than these clowns that ride up and down the roads all day long, They definetly need a IQ check!!! B)

Don't get mad if a quad passe on the road, near where you are hunting. :) Although if they stayed on the roads to begin with then there wouldn't be any problems IMO keep them out of the feild.

Muley Hunter, I got to agree with Bass on this one. Who cares if the ATV's are driving up and down the roads during the hunt??? That's what the roads are there for. Get away from the roads and you won't have this problem. Now if the ATV's are driving off the roads then that's a different story.

I am a responsible ATV rider and use them during the hunt on the roads. Once I get to the end of the road I get off and hike. What's wrong with that?

I did not mean to turn this into a hijacked bash ATV thread. I use them as well and they are great getting you in on an area on a boulder infested road. However most of us have seen people use them in manners that make us shake our head in disgust. I would like to report that on my Muzzleloader elk hunt recently, people used them as they were meant to be used. Hopefully, sportsmen are learning to keep them on the roads.

Back to the topic. As a new archer. I am a geat shot when shooting at a target. Hopefully, when I see a nice species that I am hunting with adrenaline flowing, etc, I just hope that I am half as good as when I practice in ideal situations. Therefore, I doubt a proficiency test would be worthwhile.

Tam I got no problem with responsible atv user's like you, it's the idiot's who ride up and down the roads, and never get off!!! As far as getting away from the roads in some areas I do, in other area's, I know of hotspot's less than a mile from the road. North Kaibab has many spots near the roads, just because of the number of roads in the unit. B)

Mulie hunter, sounds like your real gripe is road hunters? I agree with that. It's illegal, they should be cited and punished. But when you say - "How about banning atv use during hunting season!!!! Nothing worse than these clowns that ride up and down the roads all day long, They definetly need a IQ check!!!" It sounds like you want to ban everyone, including those that follow the laws. I would disagree with that.

I'm not one of these left wingers that likes to creat a new law to govern every detail of ones life. If we simply enforced the laws we have we wouldn't need all the new laws!!!! For example: If we enforced the no road hunting laws then nobody would care about banning ATV use during the season because there wouldn't be a problem with it.

The problem is we don't have the means to enforce the laws that are already on the books. And there are a lot of slob hunters that know they can get away with it.
