how long for your first coues?

Recommended Posts

Was wondering how long it took for you guys or gals to get there first buck with a bow. I'm really going to hunt hard this January for a wt and hope I can accomplish what most have already. Spot and stalk no stands or blinds. Thanks in advance!

+1 spot and stalk is tough...

no kidding lol, i need to find a good spot to sit during the early season one of these years. problem is i can only sit in a blind for 5-10 minutes before i want to leave.

I don't know how those guys back east sit in a stand and blinds all day. And to think about it I've never herd or seen a eastern spot and stalk hunt.

Still waiting, but I usually cheat during January and chase carp.

After a fifteen year hiatus ( medical) I took my first Coues after two years, however he was young and the rancher pushed him towards me and I moved into position and intercepted him. He stood there 2 seconds too long.

Years! With that said I shot my first and only Coue's 4 years ago at 40 yards out of a tree stand looking at a steep mountain side. I glassed him up chasing some doe's in January. I grunted really loud a couple of times to get his attention. When he looked my direction I gave him a soft grunt and he ran right in. he stopped broadside, looked over his shoulder so I drilled him.

Several blown spot and stalks, I really want to get one this way. Im getting closer ever year.

Add me to the "still waiting" category. I felt that before I became proficient with a bow I had all kinds of opportunities...now that I can actually shoot decently I have yet to get a shot.

I bowhiked for a lot of years before i figured it out & actually started bowhunting. There's a big difference between the two.

I've killed deer both by ambush & spot & stalk. Of the two methods, you will see a lot more deer by spot & stalk, but you will get a lot more shot opportunities by sitting ambushes. My buck I killed this year (a little muley) came about two hours into the third morning of sitting in the same spot. I had about 25-26 hours in that treestand. THe last coues deer I shot came after about 2 1/2 hours of sitting. I missed a nice 3x3 immediately that morning & hit a spike a couple hours later.

If you're just after a legal deer with your bow, I think ambushes are your best option.

I started when I was 16 and shot my first at 19. now I can't stop! My life basically revolves around archery coues deer hunting. I would have to go through years of rehab to quit.
