My son's first elk

Recommended Posts

My youngest son Seth was fortunate to draw a 22 north early rifle tag. When we put in he said he would not put in and "take" a cow tag from another junior who may have not got the chance to kill an animal before, he said he wanted a bull if if it took him years to get it.
So when we got the tag we were amazed and ready to take him out of school for the whole hunt.
Now the monkey wrench, Seth was accepted to the EVIT pre medical program so he would spend 1/2 his day at his high school and the other 1/2 at EVIT. When we went to the orientation night we found out that attendance is critical. He leaned over to me and said "Dad looks like I can only hunt the weekend" my heart skipped a beat. But I have to give him credit for putting his school and career first.
So with the help of friends(you know who you are) and his older brother Cody we adjusted the game plan to a 2 day hunt.
But wait another monkey wrench, I have for years done the field care talk at the desert sheep clinic and you know that date is the same date that Seth's tag is. So moving on to plan B or maybe it is Plan C or D.
During the summer we made a few scouting trips and found a few good places. So the day before the hunt Cody and I went up to see that the bulls we found would still be there, and they were. So back to Phoenix I went and after school Seth went up the mountain.
At 6am Saturday on the way to the clinic I got a text from the boys, they saw a 6x6 but couldn't get a good shot.
On a selfish note that was ok because now I can be there for the kill.
I got up there around 2 so soon after we were headed to the canyon for the afternoon hunt. We hiked deep into the canyon and started to glass and not too long into it we saw a cow and a calf and soon this bull stepped out into the open at 200 yards. Seth got set up for the shot and squeezed the first shot, and boom the bull just stood there, he must have missed, boom 2nd shot the bull didn't move. What was going on? I don't know but shoot till he is down, after 6 shots he finally walked behind a juniper and fell down. When we got up to him Seth had hit him 5 of the 6 shots that could be covered by a paper plate. I think the 270wsm with a 140gr accubonds just punched a hole clear thru without even expanding. But bull down and now the hard work begins, killed it at 6, was deboned and packed by 8pm and back to the truck at midnight.

Very nice bull! I also have a 270wsm. Do you really think those accubonds performed bad? I was considering these. At the range they should have been fully expanded. Did you find one at all?

Congrats and great story. Maybe those bullets were going too fast? Some buullets are fps sensetive. Those were developed for the 270 win maybe and not the speed of the wsm???
