FlyingW Report post Posted October 1, 2013 My two younger boys ate deer tags and a fishing trip to El Salto Mexico last year for bad grades. It killed me to go on those trips alone as some of our fondest memories together are hunting/fishing . I just couldn't reward them for not doing their studies. They were mad at first but looking back now they have both said they respect me for doing what I did. Good luck in your decision .....
deserthntr Report post Posted October 1, 2013 I graduated high school only two years ago and if I had anything below a C my dad would not take me hunting, granted I knew what I was doing enough I would take myself but I had to work so I could afford my gas to go. But before that bad grades equaled no hunting. If your son is already hooked on hunting, make him get his grades up. If he isn't I would say to take him hunting. I would let him go on one hunt but not the other if his grades are bad. So he knows your serious, but still gets to get hooked on hunting. I had a deer hunt my senior year my dad wouldn't let me go on my senior year because of grades, and I couldn't take myself cause my truck was running poorly and it was either fix my truck and have no gas money, or get my grades up so I could use my dads truck and have gas money. Needless to say my grades shot right up
lionhunter Report post Posted October 1, 2013 Man this rings true!!! Two years ago my son had a turkey tag, and some pretty poor grades. I set my limits, and as most kids he pushed them. He scrambled to get his grades up and at the last minute he was close...... Waiting for a teacher to grade his paper, I caved in and said he could go with the thought that he had done his part... I was wrong; the paper did not bring the grade up.. He won! Last year he had a 19a rifle tag. Once again I set expectations including no letting the grade slip and scrammbling at the last minute to bring it up. This time he did not go hunting! It killed him!!!! As we had glassed over a hundred deer in one day while scouting. I made hime call " hunt of a lifetime" and donate his tag. Lesson learned. This year his grandpa drew a cow elk tag. Since day one of scool I have reminded him that "B" or better or you don't go. I also said if grades drop bellow a B deals are off; no scambling to bring it up!! He has finaaly learned his lesson..... He gets to go kill an elk. It killed me and him to mis the hunt last year, but I truely think it taught him a very valuable lesson.... Good luck on this one....

8OWHUNT247 Report post Posted October 1, 2013 I am dealing with it right now.... Needless to say, if the Biology grade doesn't come up over 70 by late october, I will be donating a 20A tag..... It kills me because the hunts are the few "Father/Son ONLY" times we get and I feel like I'M the one being jipped because he can't keep his grade up... I feel your pain, but like you said.... No grades, No hunt.

No grades, No hunt. Yeah, this is what I was talking about in my post... you're willing to sacrifice some awesome and irreplaceable Father/Son ONLY time, for a measly >70% grade in High School Biology. You just don't get those times back. Hunting, in my opinion, shouldn't be held as a "reward" or ransom for anything in the first place. Isn't there other stuff to play the game with??? Allowance, xbox or whatever game console, a door for their bedroom, internet use, cell phone, household chores, new clothes/shoes, reductions in social life, rides to the mall, borrowing the car? I don't have a teenaged child, but it seems like there are other options than burning a tag and skipping out on quality time spent outdoors.

reganranch Report post Posted October 2, 2013 School is a small inconvenient sacrifice, on the path to success. The more you have of it, the more successful you will be.

My boy is a huntin' unit and quite frankly, hanging hunts over his head is the only reason he isn't failing the other classes too. He knows the drill, it's a matter of back bone on my part.. If I took electronics away, he would spend the whole afternoon shooting his bow and be A OK with it. I have my fingers crossed though, his lazy butt better pull it off.. (He normally does) It could be worse....... He could be a democrat!! LOL
KaibabHunter Report post Posted October 2, 2013 Same issue and mine is as stubborn as they come. All honors and AP but he hates homework and requires constant prodding to focus. Drives us nuts, he knows it, and doesnt really care. 1st quarter is not even over and he had 3 Fs. He has raised one to a C, one almost a C and one is still an F and all his others are now A's. If he was less of a pain in the butt I might consider a little leneancy but for the stress he causes I'm not rewarding Fs. Normally I would take him out for a week. If he pulls it off he will only be allowed to miss 1 day of school. Kills me cause we both want to hunt and a tasty cow in the freezer would be nice. We'll see. His best case scenerio is about 2.5 days to hunt, down from 7 which hurts our odds too.

I absolutely hated homework but would ace every test and pop quiz they could possibly throw at me. I never failed anything, but if I didn't like the subject I would intentionally pass it by the skin of my teeth. It drove my teachers, and my parents, absolutely crazy!
