7mm Mag Loads. Updated with hunt story!

Recommended Posts

My girl just bought herself a Tikka T3 in 7mm Mag. She is having a brake put on it right now and topped it off with a Vortex Viper HS LR FFP 4x16-44mm with tally rings. It has a 24" barrel, I was just wondering if anyone has a good 7mm load that they have had success with? Thanks for any help.

i am shooting a berger 168vld with 65 grs imr 7828 ssc it shoots MOA for me everywhere, i have a 28 in barrel and its true velocity is 2850fps not what most would think or the book says, although my dads gun the book says its suppose to be 50fps slower than it actucally is you just have to do some trial and error

28 in tube will throw off test speeds, I very rarely have the same gun as the test gun the books use. I run 63 grn of RL25 on the Berger 180 VLD and get good results. Muzzle break is a must, that thing kicks like a Mule and rearanges your thoughts for a few seconds.

Honestly I have shot core lockt store bullets in 180 grn and have good accuracy. Hard to beat the 7mm Mag.

You want to look into neck sizing these things, if not you will end up with a bulge at the belt if you full length them.

I am on loading number 6 with mine and they still chamber well.

Kind of depends on if you have powder or not. If you don't it will be difficult locate. You might be able to find some R22 or R25 or ramshot magnum. The Hodgdon powders are hard to come by but it seems to be getting better.

I shoot 150 Nosler BT's and 175 Nosler partitions. Both with RL22. With a 26" barrel I am getting 2925FPS with 64gr. Both are MOA or better.

The 2925fps is with the 175's....sorry, forgot to mention that. I never chrony'd the 150's.

63.5 grs R22, 168 berger VLDs, 3000fps 1/2 @ 200 yrds

180 berger vlds are too heavy for my gun with a 9.5 twist

She has an October Coues tag and a late November Elk tag. So i am looking to just make one load for everything. I was looking at the 168 VLD Bergers.

Jake - in that case i would use either a 140, 160 or 168 accubond. same powders. starting with H-1000 (since it is an extreme)......(i speak for only me- quite envious you can get her to hunt that, ( much awesome)

My buddy has the same rifle and shoots outstanding groups with 4831sc at 62 grains. Bullet (Barnes ttsx 150 grain) seated to mag length.

Here is a picture of his 3 shot group at 100 yards:

H1000 and Berger 168's shoot great in my gun. I don't have the powder charge info handy until the end of the week. I think I posted this before so you might search past posts.
