kingbeer Report post Posted September 24, 2013 Hello everyone, I wanted to get some advise from everyone. I am looking to go on my first hunt ever. (spring bear hunt) still need to get a license and my tag. I want to get the early archery non-permit tag (over the counter) I know that the season for this is not until march 21st -may 1st I wanted to know if I need to get my license now and buy the tag now or will I be able to wait until it gets a little closer? The longer I wait will the tags that they have go down? Any and all advise will help alot

Big Browns Report post Posted September 24, 2013 I would advise getting the O/C rifle tag or waiting for the Aug/Oct hunt! The spring hunt can and usually is extremely difficult. Be advised that Bear hunting is very addicting!!!!!!!!!!! Adam

Big Browns Report post Posted September 24, 2013 Bears do not move a lot during the Spring. Water & Grass is the key to spring Bear hunting. Most Bears will spend 98% of their time in deep dark canyon's eating grass. They can be very, very difficult to find. Your best luck will be walking as many canyon's as possible to look for fresh sign. Once you have found some good sign you should sit water as it get's hotter or use a predator call. The August/October hunt is a lot easier, because the Bears move a lot more looking for food or water. Most people sit water in August for Bears. While sitting water you can shoot Deer, Bear, Turkey & Mt. Lion in most unit's. Either way you will have a lot of fun. Adam

dieselroe Report post Posted September 26, 2013 Hunt this October and use your bow. This is a good chance to go get a feel for AZ bear hunting. Spring archery is best for when you have a bear patterned at water, food, or a trail. August is good for skinny summer bears. Oct is rifle but that means you can use archery, handgun, shotgun, rifle. You can try to call or spot and stalk. Also, bears don't hibernate the same in az as they do in places like CO or AK. More of a nap, or multiple long naps here in az. I'll be calling this Oct with a shotgun and 3 inch slugs. Just some thoughts......
