Wyoming antelope hunt(all 22 minutes of it)

Recommended Posts

post-430-1161571671.jpgSo I went to WY with my boy to hunt antelope. Met up with a hunting buddy I had not seen in 7 years up there. He came over from Oregon to hunt with us. It was an awesome hunt, I tagged mine in 22 minutes and on the way to the processor and about 1 mile from where I connected he shot a 14 5/8 with 7 in bases and good mass to the paddles. We were down the mountain and the goats were in the cooler at the processor by 1030. I used my new toy 257 weatherby and now I have a new streak to uphold with it, one shot out of it and one kill :D My son was there for both kills ( he is 10) and after I shot mine I heard him yell " that was awesome" when he saw it fold. That pretty much made my hunt, oh and we shot both bucks on the 3rd day of the season in public land, since he was patrolling hunts in OR and I had my surgery day on Wed. The 100gr bullet took out the liver and the left lung. I am trying to attach a pic but it is way to big and I have downsized it , hopefully it will post this time.

Now if only Whitetail were that easy to hunt! ag

post-430-1161573977.jpgThanks, I am going to tempt fate and try and load another pic of my buddies buck.

post-430-1161574159.jpgOh and I cant leave off the pic that made this trip worthwhile, the smile on his face is what I will remember 30 years from now when he has to take me hunting instead of vice versa, I already promised him that I will take him up there when he turns 12 to kill an antelope( his bday is 10/9 so I can tell the wife it is a present :D .) I guess that is really what it is all about, he is my oldest and then I have 3 daughters and so we get picked on alot  It was awesome just spending time with him and enjoying watching him enjoy the hunt and the cameraderie. He also did not blow cookies when I gutted it so he passed the first test!! AG

fatfootdoc,

Congrats to you and your buddy on two fine goats.

Antelope hunts are, in my opinion, the best hunt to take a youngster on. The weather is normally mild, you can usually show the kids lots of goats and you don't have to hike too much. My son was with me when I took a goat in MT a couple of years ago when he was 9. He had a blast.

Congrats to you and your buddy those are some fine lookin goats. That is absolutely awesome that your son was able to witness you taking a fine goat. I'm sure that will be a hunt that he will never forget.

I agree with deerslam about antelope hunts being good to take younger hunters on. When I was about 12 I got to see my dad drop an antelope in its tracks at about 40 yards with his .54 cal TC Hawkins Muzzleloader. The following year I got drawn and was able to harvest my first antelope at about 100 yards with a muzzleloader as well. Both hunts were fairly tough and required a lot of spot and stalk. These hunts have given me awesome memories that will stick with me forever. Once again Congrats!

That is cool. It is great to see the youngsters out in the field. There is no better place for them except maybe school.

AG

Great story and nice goats! Aint it funny how Short hunts with long term preparations make us wish it was not so easy, and long difficult hunts make us wish for hunts like yours?

Welcome to Wyoming.

Oh, by the way, for anyone else wanting to hunt antelope in Wyoming, it is sort of like the Coues in AZ unit 23.... there are none left! Sorry, AG got the last ones :D

fatfoot: fantastic job especially taking your son. Antelope hunts are the best for young kids. You can buy over the counter left over doe tags in WY for around 50.00. The scenery and fun while seeing alot of animals keeps the kids excited.........glad your new toy worked great. That is a fun/flat shooting gun...........AT...............

We stayed with some friends up there and the guy we hunted with is a taxidermist so my son came home with all sorts of loot. He helped him skin some porcupines and coons and now I have to boil out a bunch of skulls that he gave my boy as well as a buffalo skull. So my son had a blast the whole time we were there(he also got to watch some movies that his mom does not let him watch ;) ) Cant wait to go back next year. AG
