Santa Catalina Bighorn Restoration Project

Recommended Posts

What about Newman peak and the picachos? I have heard of several bighorn sightings around there but haven't heard of an actual resident herd. Is there one already or are the sheep that have been spotted there just passing through?

The ones that have been seen around the Picachos and Newman Peak were passing through or trying to get there and stopped by the freeway. We are working on fixing up the water developments on and around the mountain so it will be ready for some in the future.

I have to believe that this project should take a lil more looking into. I was raised watching the sheep in pima, Romero, pusch, the catchment( anyone remember signing the note book?) with Pioneers... Bill Hardy, John Levison, Eddie Cocking, Pete Cowgill...... No one seems to "know" what happened, lots of theories though. I would think you'd need to know the problem to solve it. But what do I know. Solid waste of money.....and no worries on drawing a tag....lol

As long as you don't take our Region 4 sheep to transplant into Region 5 its all good! Just kidding! Good luck guys! I initially had concerns about this project, but I support what Ben and the guys are doing.

Im no biologist but doesnt the Helicopter surveys say it all? Since the 60's whether or not they came in on their own or were placed there (assuming they came in on their own), they never stayed! Data is right here on this thread...they never sustained a population in 50 years of data.....what changes now?

Waste of money and resources! Donate? You got to be kidding me! I donate enough with my increased license and tag fees. And why am I being told to stay out of public land that I pay for with my tax dollars? I truley hope the sheep are all eaten in a year! No more restrictions on where and when I can hunt! How many officers is it going to take to enforce this closure area? They can't even patrol unit 33 as is... now they have to babysit sheep?

Ya know, last spring I saw a road kill on the side of I-10 right in between Picacho and Newman. It was at night, but I could've sworn it was a sheep. Passed it off as just a muley until I found out about the silverbell sheep and then I figured they could've easily traveled that far...

Back in the day a new ram showed up at the catchment behind el conquistador that had a blue eartag. Found out it traveled from the superstitions. They can travel...fosho.
