Guest 300ultramag. Report post Posted September 17, 2013 Im certian one of you have had this scenario and Im trying to make the best decision as a man and as a father. I need some input Roxie is my yellow lab- I have had her since she was a pup and she has been my hunting partner for over a decade now. Tates is my 4yo daughter whom is highly allergic to the dog. Asthma With my schooling I am currently forced to be a renter and the little ones allergist suggests I rent a newer house to aid in her asthma/allerigies and to get rid of the dog. I am currently trying to find a newer rental property that allows dogs.I have yet to find a newer property that also allows dogs. We found a killer home thats older but has been rennovated top to bottom however the rental company has TERRIBLE reviews and Im about to get a lease for1 year with them and the clock is ticking wher Im at now. Back at square one. Im not a tree hugger or a softy but if i had the dog for 2-3 years this wouldnt be an issue but since Roxie is over 10 years old it changes the whole dynamic of my choices. Options? Thoughts? I will say this my daughters health is priority and weve had one too many close calls/ER visits. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted September 17, 2013 I have a good insight to this issue. My wife has bad asthma and we have mules and dogs. What we did was build the house and have zero carpet. Central vac system makes a big difference with keeping the dust down. We wash the dogs every day when we get home and then they come in the house for the night and go out only to use the bathroom. Ounce we stuck to this she has less issues now. There is no way the dogs would go for her but that is her decision, they are her babies and she would suffer and die before they would go believe me. Her doctor said its not so much the dog its self that is the issue but what the dog gets into outside, so we wash them before they come in and keep the house very clean and change ac filters often and use the good ones (like 20 bucks each) After picking up a cabin in Overgaard a few years ago we notice she has way less issue up there when we stay for several days so being anywhere near the city can hurt more than animals, the dogs sleep with us in bed at the cabin and she still has less issues, she starts to feel the heavy chest on the ride home when we get into town. We are now working on getting out of the valley all together, even though we are out in Wickenburg the smog floats out further than you think. Good luck. Like you said, put your daughter's needs first and hopefully as mentioned above, some family can step up so you could continue to see your dog. Hang in there! Adicted Report post Posted September 17, 2013 i would find a house that allows dogs and make a dog run in the backyard for your dog. Nice dog house, put A/C in it if you want. That way the dog and daughter dont get in contact. Until you can figure this out just ask someone to watch your dog for a few weeks. No need to get rid of your buddy after that many years. I know several people that had bad allergies, but got tested and treated and now don't have a big issue. Dogs are so common that it will be hard for her with that allergy. Mocha1545 Report post Posted September 17, 2013 I think Mulepackhunter has the best solutions but hard for you with renting. Carpet and drapes are the worst. If you could find a place with tile or wood floors. Chage the filters often and get the good ones. We also bought a small air purifier for my daughters room which really helps her. My daughter is allergic to darn near everything (which to her delight, keeps her from doing any chores outside) with cats and dogs being up there. She would kill us if we got rid of the animals so we vacuum her room almost daily. Give the dogs a bath almost daily and change the filters monthly. She had Asthma when she was younger but hasn't had the attacks in about 10 years. She has to take meds for it but we have made it work. It is a tough choice for you.
