What kind of calls were you having success calling them in with? Also were you mostly bull calling or cow calling?

Bulls have been bugling all day long for a week now for me. After observing the lack of bugling interest in my area I changed tactics. I started leaving camp about 7, locating with a bugle, follow them, then sneaking in when they bed. Shot mine at 12:00 noon yesterday. 4th bull I had snuck up to in 2 days.

The OP is in a good spot, only 2 bulls came to my calls and I had to split the herd to get that to happen.

Good luck on your hunt PD.

Just talked to a couple different buddies in unit 1. They both said the bugling has dropped way off since Sunday night. They said that they have watched bulls rutting cows but they wouldn't call any. Probly just a lull due to the pressure and hopefully it will pick up in a day or two. There sure has been some big bulls killed across the state. I've seen pics of 5 different 400"+ bulls already! Love this time of year...

Trophy, I didn't start hunting till after 8:00. Everybody else is back doing laundry and I was a sneaking in on bugling bedded bulls. I snuck in on 2 bulls the day before that some guy was bugling from the road then I watched him drive off so I hiked up and was less than 30 yards from the two for over 2 1/2 hours. Still bugling when Ieft at 11:00.

The bull I shot bugled at me when I shut off my quad at 11:00, snuck in to 20 yards and texted my wife at 11:30 saying I had just snuck in on another bull. He then heard me take my pack off and came forward then dropped down the hill where I whacked him at 15 yards. These bulls are finding the broken terrain/ heavier cover to bed, places where an archer can get close enough for a shot. Most of the country I have seen is way too open to have much luck calling so I changed things up and it works.

ya i creeped up on 2 bulls right out of my camp day before the season opened. they were bugling like crazy at noon. theres just no way i could start hunting at 7 during an early season archery bull hunt.

Stalking bulls in their beds can be done but if you blow a big bull out of his bedding area it is a good chance you have just lost your chance at ever getting him. Not looking for a debate on this,I just hope we don't start having everyone pushing elk out of the country because they are trying to slip into bedding areas.

sorry, but i dont get your post about not hunting them during the day. i dont do that much because its not that effective if they arent bugling. obviously no one wants to bump their elk out of the country but if theres a chance of killing one that way i would do it. youre right a lot of the posts on this sight are a joke, i get the feeling that only half the members even really hunt
