bullwidgeon Report post Posted October 19, 2006 Anyone got experinces with the MSR Sweetwater or Katadyn Hiker filters? What do you like and why? I found a little weener buck that lives 4 miles and 2000 feet above the nearest road. I have a .300 Weatherby and could probably shoot him that far away but in the interest of making it sporting I may hike up and watch him and video him for a few days before I back off to about a mile and fold him up like an old map. Not packing 4 gallons of water around while I am living among the rocks and cactus would be awesome. There are plenty of tinajas and springs where this deer lives. Thanks. Bret M. azcouesandelk Report post Posted October 19, 2006 http://www.rei.com/product/112775.htm I have not used the filters you said but I did use the one above while in Alaska. The only complaint I have about it is that it takes quite a while to refill several water bottles.
Kevin Report post Posted October 19, 2006 Brett, The muzzle blast from that hand cannon should be enough to sterilize the water in any tinajas if your near enough! I've used the Sweetwater, and it works well. I've heard of some people having problems with the handle breaking off but have not experienced it myself. I have heard nothing but good about the Katadyn filters, but have no experience with them. I'd choose the lightest, smallest and go for it with confidence. Good luck killin' that "weaner" buck! COUESAZ Report post Posted October 19, 2006 I have a kaytadyn and like it. I think they all take a bit of time to use and fill your bottles or bladder. And they can all break in use. The most important thing is to keep the fill hose and the suck hose in seprate bags so you do not contamanate the filler tube. If you were as tuff as Lark you could drink out of a muddy hoof print and be OK.

COOSEFAN Report post Posted October 22, 2006 I'm a newbie to the pack-in style of hunting. I've done overnighters but never longer than that. We will be packing in for the entire hunt next week, and I bought the cheapie water filter and the purifier tablets. We figured the cheap water filter will get rid of the big chunks and the tablets will kill the harmful stuff. Is this a stupid way to go? I saw the filters that have been mentioned here, but because I had to buy my whole pack-in setup today, I had to skimp on some stuff. I bought the Bota Outback water filter and it says it removes Giardia and Crypto, and the tablets kill/neutralize everything else. Will I run into problems with this? COUESAZ Report post Posted October 22, 2006 You should be fine. I know survival freaks that just use the Tablets and it is OK. It is mainly animal waste that conaminates water sources so just get the chunks out and you should be ok. Good luck on your pack hunt. They are a blast and more work than you will ever want to do again all rolled into one. And next year you will want to do it all over again. Go figure. I bought all my stuff today and just set up my little tent and tried everything out, that has me excited just preparing for the trip! Shortpants is going with and usually packs in to hunt and kills some huge bucks that way, hopefully this trip is no different, we'll see! I'm lugging the video camera along so it'll at least make for great video! JIM>
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 22, 2006 Cool. I saw travis while he was out shooting Quail today. he told me he saw his brothers bull hornes and they are huge. I told him you had the video posted on here , But he said he saw it at his brothers house. I was out on a quad run. I glassed up a monster coues at about 600 yards. He was a buck that wet dreams are made of. I told travis to bad he had a mule deer tag in that area and not a coues tag.
COOSEFAN Report post Posted October 22, 2006 that's Travis's luck! I hope I find a deer like that next week and make those dreams come true! JIM>
ScottAdams Report post Posted October 22, 2006 Bret, I haven't looked at purifiers and filters in a long time. I have a PUR that I've had for over 10 years and the thing works great. Never got sick even though I've filtered out water that was mostly cow pucky. There may be and probably are some better filters on the market now than my little PUR Hiker. I'll probably use it on my NM hunt this coming weekend and will definitely use on the 27/28 Coues hunt in November. Good Luck killin' that there weaner buck.
